Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs are back at Glasgow’s Sub Club four years after they graced the stage as up-and- coming indie group St Etienne. That night Bob experimented in performing while being completely sober. It was, he says, the most nerve-racking experience he’s ever bad.
This time, he’s up for a bit more fun, getting down behind the decks, playing more for himself than for the crowd. The tracks he picks for a night on the town are ones he hasn’t heard in clubs before. ‘I try and play things
people don’t expect, until it clears the dance-floor,’ he says. Usually his set is spot-on though, drawing from his eclectic and sometimes eccentric taste in music. I mean, when was the last time you heard lleil Diamond in the Subby?
Club life for Bob reflects the nature of his studio work, in more ways than one. ‘The records sink in to my brain and then get ripped off unconciously later,’ he says. ‘Whether it comes out sounding like lleil Diamond is another matter . . . ’ llisstudlo workatthe moment is similarly diverse.
Sarah Cracknell, St Etienne’s sometimes off-key singer, is off again, doing a solo album with Johnny from Soul Family Sensation. All Saint Etienne recordings have been put on hold, allowing Bob and fellow St Etienner Pete Wiggs to diversify. A splinter group, Hotel, is now on the go: a three-piece girl band involving deep harmonies. They are also working on the production of the new ‘Espiritu’ single which looks like being ‘a latin/lungle crossover’, influenced heavily by the duo’s recent penchant for hanging out in the finest london lungle clubs. They're also having thoughts about what the new St Etienne album will sound like. Cocktail lounge lazz is the theme they’re toying with at the moment. Sober? llever! (liory Weller)
