Moving Hearts were widely credited with launching the current interest in combiningjazz with folk music. Piper Davy Spillane leads this re-construction of the ten-piece band which played on their classic instrumental album The Storm. their most overt example of that fusion. Support comes from Glasgow folkies The iron Horse. (Celtic Connections).

She is developing into a musician to be reckoned with. and will give the new team now running the Edinburgh Jazz Project‘s gigs at The Tron a good launch to their first season in charge. We wish them well. but thanks are also due to the outgoing team of ion and Dominic and their various helpers. who have worked hard to ensure we had some memorable nights ofquaiity ‘azz to enjoy. '

Singer Mary Coughlan began her career in the folk clubs. but her music is every bit as influenced byjazz (notably the example of Billie Holiday) and blues. Mary is double-booked tonight. and will also be opening the A Woman 3' Heart concert at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh (7.30pm) before shooting across the M8 to make this Celtic Connections gig. where The Campbells will fill the opening slot. There will also be a less overt but still palpable jazz influence when Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tlclrell leads her band in the Strathclyde Suite at the Concert Hall (8pm. £7.50). also as part of the Celtic Connections event.
