number of musicians now involved in cross-breeding jazz with folk. but this Anglo-Scottish-lrish quintet is definitely one of the front runners. Led by saxophonist Tim Garland and Dundonian guitarist (and acclaimed poet) Don Paterson. the band have evolved a very distinctive and highly creative musical direction which is still in the process of developing. Their second album. featuring tonight's line-up with uillean piper and percussionist Steafan Hannigan. drummer Mark Fletcher. and singer Christine Tobin. is due for imminent release on the EF]. label. Highly recommended.

The results were excellent. and Assembly now offer a touring platform for the band‘s sophisticated take on contemporary bop mores. The trumpeter has assembled a top-notch European outfit. featuring the Icelandic saxophonist Siggl Flosason (heard here with the Rekjavik Jazz Quartet a couple of years back). electrifying Portugese pianist Bernardo Sassetti, and Barker‘s regular bass partner Alec Oankworth, while new man Ralph Salmins takes over in the drum seat.
