‘In a lot of New York clubs — USA, Limelight, The Roxy - you’ll hear the same songs, the same style. At the moment they’re all trying to get that Factory sound.’ It’s 11.30pm and down the line from New York, Danny Tenaglia is debunking a few of the myths held in Britain about the New York club scene.
Tenaglia’s style of tough garage can be found on a multitude of remixes - Jamiroquai and Grace Jones to name two, his releases as The Look and The Daou and on his deep, percussive ‘Bottom Heavy’ cut on the forthcoming Tribal UK compilation. Despite all this and his respected status this side of the Atlantic, Tenaglia doesn’t have a regular spot in New York, where he claims the club scene is at times apathetic. ‘Recently Tony Humphries and i started a Thursday called Aqua Booty, even with a name like Tony’s it wasn’t busy.’

His album project, working title ‘The Danny Tenaglia Hardened Soul Project is,’ he says, ‘more hard garage stuff. The first track will be very tribal, the second a strong black female vocal — Beautiful People - that kinda message.’
As far as the forthcoming Tribal UK tour goes, expect to hear exclusives from the album ‘I’ll be bringing the very best of what I have in my crates.’ That, without doubt, is a promise. (Bethan Cole)
Catch Danny Tenaglia on the mix as part of the Tribal UK tour at Tribal Funktion, The Venue, Edinburgh on Sat 6 Aug and at The Sub Club, Glasgow on Sun 7 Aug. The Tribal UK compilation is released on 1 Aug and features tracks from Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez, Kiwi Dreams and Joi Cardwell.
