1 Junior Boys Own since its extraction from London records in 1991 has become the hippest, most successful independent dance label in the country. According to boss Boy Steve Hall it’s all down to their well rounded musical tastes, a determination to stick with what they believe in and a background of ‘crappy lobs’. Ex-British Airways employee llall explains. ‘All of us have had crappy jobs and doing what we are doing is much better than what we did before. I think my goals in life and my aspirations tor the label are different to Richard Branson’s when he started Virgin. He wanted a big business and
JUNIOR BOYS OWN
wanted to make lots of money. I’m not worried about that. I just like putting out records I like with people I like. If other people like them then that’s really good. To be honest, though, there are lots of records we put out that aren’t that popular and don’t sell 30 thousand copies, but we still want to put them out.’
It’s not that they don’t want to sell skip-loads of vinyl, it’s just that they’re not suicidal about the way things are going just now.
‘I don’t ever want to get to the stage where it’s just producing pieces of plastic that pay us x amount of money, the way that people like MS and Strictly Rhythm have gone. In a lot of countries though, half our records are dismissed and the other half are well received. In America they like Xpress 2 and Terry Farley’s records but don’t take a blind bit of notice of the Dust Brothers or Underworld.’
With a view to the future, though, llall thinks they’re not going to get any bigger than they are now unless they change their work ethic, which they’re not prepared to do. lle’s happy just doing what he’s doing. The room for growth, he says, will come through changing the way the label is viewed abroad.
