A screwball comedy set in the tacky world of a daytime soap where the executive producer is about to leave. the story editor is contemplating suicide. and a hetero writer who's just Split up with his girlfriend begins an affair with the scripter. And this is just what's going on the production office — the clips from the show are even more melodramatic. Hip and funny. with great performances. Glasgow: GFT.
I Ell-n Old Men (12) (Donald Petrie. US. 1993) Walter Matthau. Jack Lemmon. Ann- Margret. 103 mins. Two grouchy neighbours re- run their earlier fight over the late wife of one when a sparky new woman moves in close-by. Matthau and Lemmon are as irascilbe and funny as ever. but the thin plot and predictable gags don‘t give them enough to get their dentures into. Plenty of sharp one-liners but a mite too strained to recapture the glories of yesteryear. General release.

A film buff starts showing old classics in a revamped moviehouse. but his opening movie — a swords and sandals adventure epic — arrives in the unsubtitled Italian original version. With a couple of mates. he begins frantically to improvise a voiceover. A special late night screening at 11.30pm on Thurs 9 June for those taking this copy of The List to the Cameo box office. with a free glass of beer thrown in beforehand. The centrepiece, of the Edinburgh Film Festival Syberberg retrospective in 1992. this monumental. highly stylised work falls into four parts of impressively staged tableaux. Not merely a critique of The Fuhrer. but a complex examination of a nation's history. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Acid-tongued stand-up may be straining at the leash somewhat in his commercial breakthrough. but this is still a Disney comedy with bite. Gus the cat burglar bungles his latest job and finds himself trapped with a couple of irritating hostages. a feuding husband and wife. Having gone as far as he could on stage. maybe this isn‘t such a bad route for Leary after all. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. UCl.

John Lynch. 133 mins. writer-director Sheridan manipulates the facts concerning the wrongful arrest and eventual acquittal of Gerry Conlon. one of the Guildford Four; but the deep. disturbing truths of this miscarriage ofjustice remain constant. Gere is architect Vincent Eastman. torn between his wife (Stone) and his lover (Davidovich); the former provides security. the latter. a spark of passion. This could have been a real tear-jerker if you gave a damn about the future happiness of any of the characters; but everyone is so insipid. there won't be a dry eye in the house. General release.
I The Joy luck Chi (15) (Wayne Wang. US. 1993) Tsai Chin. Ming-Na Wen. Tamlyn Tomita. 139 mins. lntertwining tales of four Chinese women and their Chinese-American daughters which use elements of ethnicity and the immigrant experience to highlight the more
universal themes of mother/daughter
relationships. Above all. it is a very Hollywood- style movie. attempting to manipulate emotions and downplay much of the insight of Amy Tan's novel. but it will strike a chord with many in the audience. and not just the women. Fife: Adam Smith.

Take a car. a writer of a thesis. a photographer. a white trash woman- child and a murderous psycho. and put them on a road trip to the sites of various serial killings. The result is not your average serial killer movie. but a tight and stylish character‘driven piece that plays with our fascination for killers while delivering some slap-bang gore. I Lessons Of 0m (PG) The environmental consequences of the Gulf War are captured by German director Werner Herzog in this moving documentary. There's a strange beauty to his helicopter shots of burning oil fields that chills when set against the personal memories of dead relatives by Iraqi ‘survivors'. Video screening. I Little BMW (PG) (Bernardo Benolucci. US/UK/France. 1993) Keanu Reeves. Ying Ruocheng. Alex Wiesendanger. 120 mins. A Seattle moppet may or may not be the reincarnation of a recently deceased Tibetan monk. so he and dad go to Bhutan where he's given a potted history of Buddhism. The story of Siddanha is easily the best section. with Vittorio Storaro's glorious cinematography to commend it. but elsewhere the pace is doggedly slow. the eco-friendly sentiments hazy. and the lecturing tone like a school lesson. Bertolucci‘s greatest folly. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Hitchcock's first suspenser has mysterious lodger Novello suspected by a jealous detective of being Jack The Ripper. and eventually pursued through the streets by an angry mob in one of the master's most powerful early sequences. I look Who's Talking low (12) (Tom Ropelewski. US. 1994) John Travolta. Kirsty Alley. Olympia Dukakis. 97 mins. Is there really an audience out there for a third in the irritating baby voiceover series? Oh dear. 1 know you're going to prove me wrong. Missing the Christmas market by a fair bit. the plot this time has our heroes spending Yuletide looking after a couple of canines. General release.

After saving the life ofa loan shark. a cop is 'given‘ a beautiful barmaid for a week; but when he falls for her. he has to fight for his love. Casting the major stars against type works well in a film that is at times disconcerting but consistenly enjoyable. Edinburgh: Cameo.

The cityscapes remain unsurpassed. although the allegory against totalitarianism is a bit naive. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
