When Snowflake. mascot of the Miami Dolphins. goes missing. there's only one man for the job — Ace Ventura. a cross between Phillip Marlowe and Dr Doolittle. America‘s best male child actor. carries his role at the centre of this appealing Disney version of Mark Twain's classic. Teaming up with a runaway slave. Up-and-coming lawyer Newland Archer risks the wrath of 1870s New York society when he falls in love with the scandal-shrouded Countess Olenska. despite being already engaged. Scorsese is magnificently faithful to Edith Wharton‘s novel. while painting its troubled emotions with an eloquent camera. I Antonia: Voices PM The Rainiorest (PG) (Brazil/US/Columbia. 1991) 70 mins. It's not surprising that a documentary chronicling the last 500 years of the Amazon should press the urgency of its ecological message against deforestation. But while there's sadness at the decline in indigenous tribes. there‘s hope in their use of the media to bring their case to the world. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

A street- wise alley cat woos an upper-class feline against the backdrop of tum-of-the-century Paris. Pretty soon. this Beethoven has produced a not-so- musical quartet of pooping pups. whose ability for mischief is matched only by their sickening cuteness. I M's Video (18) (Michael Haneke. Austria. 1992) Arno Frisch. Angela Winkler. Ulrich Muhe. 105 mins. With wider social concerns
than other films that link images and acts of violence. Benny's Video tells of a teenage boy who has been emotionally de-sensitised by both his avid watching of violent videos and his parents' obsession with social conformity. A demanding film. but one which rewards one's intellectual engagement with provocative images and telling insights. Glasgow: GFT.
I Blllfi (18) (Michael Apted. US. 1994) Madeleine Stowe. Aidan Quinn. James Reemar. 106 mins. A woman who has been blind since childhood is given a corneal transplant and is the sole witness to a murder. although the fuzzy image only slowly begins to reveal itself to her. Investigating cop Quinn is suspicious. but he's distracted by her body. Apted's classy. intelligent suspenser is emotionally involving and finely acted. Edinburgh: Odeon.
I Blue Velvet (18) (David Lynch. US. 1986) Kyle MacLachlan. Dennis Hopper. Isabella Rossellini. 120 mins. 1n small-town Middle America. would-be boy detective MacLachlan finds a severed car on some waste ground. When the police shoo him away he decides to do some investigating of his own. A singular fusion of the cosy and the terrifying which blends kitsch and nightmare. B-movie detection and brutal sex to deconstruct our complacent vision of normal society. This is film-making of remarkable imagination and skill. Edinburgh: FIlmhouse.
I Brighton Rock (PG) (John Boulting. UK. 1947) Richard Attenborough. Hermione Baddeley, William Hartnell. 91 mins. The pre- luvvie Attenborough brings a menacing delinquincy to Pinkie. who has to sweet-talk a waitress who witnesses one of his murders. The seaside atmosphere is essentially English and somehow sordid in this fine adaptation of Graham Greene‘s novel. which has lost none of its power to thrill. Glasgow: GFT.
I A Bronx Tale (15) (Robert De Niro. US. 1993) Robert De Niro. Chazz Palminteri. Lillo Brancato. 124 mins. After witnessing a fatal shooting. a young boy is taken under the wing of a local hood; but this bad angel's influence is balanced with advice from his honest. hard- working father. An atmospheric. subtly rendered coming-of-age tale set in the 60s. with De Niro showing ample talent before and behind the camera. Strathclyde: UCI Clydebank. WMR.
I A Canterbtn Tale (U) (Michael Powell. UK. 1944) Eric Portman. Sheila Sim. John Sweet. 124 mins. An odd wartime piece from Powell and Pressburger in which a British and American soldier. along with a land girl. who make their own pilgrimage to Canterbury. and succeed in unrnasking a local man who pours glue on girls' hair in the night. The counUyside is finely rendered in Erwin Hillier's photography. Glasgow: GFT.
I “ll Coeur En lliver A Heart In Winter (12) (Claude Sautet. France. 1992) Daniel Auteuil. Emmanuelle Beart. Andre Dussolier. 105 mins. A withdrawn violin maker becomes the object of desire for a young violinist who herself is the amour of the forrner's business partner. An elegantly trenchant chronicle of triangular relationships which moves with such graceful fluidity that it's easy to miss the toughness at its core. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Costs and See (18) (Elim Klimov. USSR. I987) Alexei Kravchenko. Olga Mironova. 142 mins. Klimov's epic account of an atrocious Nazi massacre in Byelorussia in 1943 is one of the genuinely great films of the decade. The horrific events are seen through the eyes of a young boy (Kravchenko). who ages visibly throughout a remarkable performance. Not simply a meditation on Russian history. but an epic about mankind. at once harrowing and visionary. which demonstrates that film can still take on the most monumental of issues in a serious fashion. I Cool Ruining: (PG) (John Turteltaub. US. 1993) Doug E. Doug. Leon. John Candy. 99 mins. Speculative comedy based on the first-ever Jamaican bobsled team at the last Winter Olympics is hannlessly amiable. but unfortunately cranks up too many moralistic messages complete with appropriate accompanying music. Still. audiences seem to like its easy-going nature. making it an affectionate tribute to the late John Candy. Glasgow: Cannon. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. UCI. I Cries I'll WNW ( 18) Ingmar Bergman. Sweeden. 1972) Harriet Anderson. Ingrid Thulin. Liv Ullrnann. 91 mins. At the turn of the century. a middle-aged spinster lies dying of cancer. Her two sisters. one frigid. one suicidal. come to watch over her. Mounted in the style of Edvard Munch. Bergman's bleak and harrowing vision of suffering and Sven Nykvist's Oscar winning photography in various tones of red combine seamlessly to form a quite hypnotic confrontation with mortality. 95 mins. The director of Trois Hommes Er Un Coifl‘un and Romuald And Juliette plays for farce-style laughs the story of a man who loses his job and his wife in a day. A fistful of contemporary issues are thrown up. but one or two flashes of inspiration aside. these personal disasters are a pretty weary ride. Fife: Adam Smith.

Infamous as the film on which martial arts star Bruce Lee's son Brandon was killed by a defective stunt gun. this is the most consistent attempt yet to create on film the distinctive feel of the graphic novel. The characterisation and plot development may be slight - a rock star comes back from the dead to wrech revenge on the gang who killed him and his girlfriend - but stylistically. it's a gem. The economic success of a 19th century Belgian mill town has been won at the cost of appalling conditions for the workers. so socialist priest Adolf Daens sets out on a crusade and wins a seat in parliament. to the disgust of the Conservative Catholic Party. Decleir‘s rugged authority carries the movie. which is decent middlebrow viewing with unimpeachable intentions. Glasgow: GFT.
I Dangerous Game (18) (Abel Ferrara. US. 1993) Harvey Keitel. Madonna. James Russo. 107 mins. Keitel is directing a movie called ‘Mother Of Mirrors'. starring Madonna and Russo; as filming continues. the relationship between him and his female star increasingly parallels that between Ferrara and Madonna. A film about three people tearing each other apart while making a movie about the same thing. as intense and claustrophobic as Ferrara's best work. but with more meaning for those involved than anyone else. An attempt to literally bury his pen-name goes fatally wrong for novelist Thad Beauth when a physical manifestation of his pseudonym starts stalking his household. An inventive twist on the Jekyll and Hyde scenario. with enjoyany overblown effects. which makes for one of the better mainstream horror movies in recent years. Glasgow: Odeon. All UCIs.

A teenage orphan gets a gig as an apprentice tailor with an old-school tradesman. comes up with a series of fantastical couture designs and captures the heart of a winsome lass. The movie's undeniable but slight charm isn't much to offer. but it won't make you unhappy. See review. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Max Klein's reaction to his near-death experience has a metaphysical bent reminiscent of director Peter Weir's early work.
