g If musicians generally feel that
exposure to the strummings of their
3 forebears and contemporaries is a
Good Thing, then no one’s told
Autechre. They’re more likely to be influenced by their evening frisbee
5 sessions in the back garden than by
l saturating their lives in music.
i ‘We like to paint this picture of two
i little people afraid to cross the road,’
5 grins Bob Brown, ‘but it’s just a bit of
; fun I guess. We do try to stay at home
f most of the time and stay pretty
insular. It keeps you more on the ball
with your own style of music as
opposed to getting wound up in what
other people are doing. If you go to
somewhere like London to hang out
you end up getting caught in this
horrible cobweb.’
According to their own perception, Rob and his Autechre partner Sean Booth are still learning to crawl. So far they’ve released one appropriately- titled LP ‘lncunabula’ (it means ‘earliest stages’, despite sounding like a cloud formation or devil nymph or something) and the current ‘Bass Cadet’ EP.
They’ve been working together for the past five years, having met through a mutual interest in hip-hop
BASS CADETs
culture. Initially they mixed DJ tapes using Rob’s decks and drum machine and Sean’s sampler but as Rob explains, ‘We came to a fuzzy point where we decided “we don’t need these turntables anymore, we might as well make our own acid tracks.” ’
Similarly fuzzy are the parameters governing Autechre’s field of activity. They feel the variety of their LP has been overlooked in the application of the catch-all ‘ambient’ tag to their work.
‘We’d like to snub the whole genre. A lot of our live sets are not ambient at all. People think they’ve sussed us out already alter just one album and there’s a much larger side to us than that.’
The new EP in all its remix permutations should go some way to rectifying the situation. ‘We chose ‘Bass Cadet’ to remix because it’s old and it was good to see what we would do now with the same raw material. One of the good things about it is it confuses issues about what sort of band we are.’
Er . . . a good one, perhaps? (Fiona Shepherd)
