I Tommy Chase Quartet Tron Jazz Cellar. Tron Tavern and Ceilidh House. Hunter Square (off High Street). 220 1550. 8.30—11pm. £4 (£3). Drummer Tommy Chase has the reputation of being the wild man of British hard-bop (an image he plays to in his publicity shots of the band. looking menacing in sharp suits and shades). and his quartets. if short on the niceties. can always be relied on to take no prisoners in delivering bags of energy and. as one of his successful albums put it. drive. It‘s been a few years since he played in these parts. but I doubt if they have mellowed him very much.

On f their last couple of tours. this exhilarating . modern big band have been joined by f eminent transatlantic composer-arrangers Ernie Wilkins and Rob McConnell. but this time around they have opted to focus ' on the music of the greatest of all big . band writers. Duke Ellington. The orchestra have a long history of involvement with great American jazzmen (some of whom. like the late Thad Jones and Wilkins. had settled in Copenhagen). and their particular interpretation of the Ellington repertoire under conductor ()le Kock Hanson should be marked down as one of the year's ‘must hear' occasions.
