INDEX FILM
recuperative process on the latter and a hidden walled garden. Touching and uncontrived. Edinburgh: UCl. Central: Allanpark. Strathclyde: Motherwell.
I the Shining (18) (Stanley Kubrick. US. 1980) Jack Nicholson. Shelly Duvall. Philip Stone. 146 mins. Kubrick‘s overwrought. Overlong horror film dispenses with much of the psychic apparatus of Stephen King‘s novel to concentrate on the deeper horror of a fartiin ttrrning in on itself. Nicholson. with all the stops ottt. is bug- eyed and demonic as the writer cracking up violently in an isolated hotel. and the final scenes are. literally. chilling. lidinburgh: Cameo. I Simple Men (15) (Hal Hartley. US. 1992) William Sage. Robert Burke. Karen Sillas. 104 mins. Two mismatched brothers go in search of their athlete-turned-radical father. whose absent presence acts like Godot to their listragon and Vladimir. And. as in the stage piece. it‘s the wordplay (Hartley's patented ear for quirky dialogue) and wayward philosophising en route that becomes more important than the journey itself. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Sleepless In Seattle (PG) (Nora l-Iphron. l‘S. 1993) Meg Ryan. Tom Hanks. 105 mins. ()ne of the most wann-heaned romantic comedies to emerge from Hollywood in years. again proving the talent of Nora Ephr'on. who wrote When Harry Met Sally. Newspaper reporter Ryan hears a radio talk show which features recently widowed architect Hanks. She's sure they are made for each other. bill the whole of the United States lies between them. Glasgow: ()dcon.

Charlie Mackenzie is a bit paranoid about his girlfriends. such has been his bad luck; bttt now he's sure he‘s dating Miss X. a female serial killer who chops her hubbies. Fun. over-the-top stuff from the Wayne half of ll’trvneir World. and which includes sotne of the best Scottish gags recently put on screen — watch out for the ‘Do Ya Think I'm Sexy‘." Rod Stewart bagpipe karaoke. Honest. Glasgow: Odeon. All L'Cls.
I Son In law (tbc) (Steve Rash. US. 1993) Pauly Shore. Lane Smith. Carla Gugino. Another movie thrust out on an unsuspecting public with little or no press coverage. It's about a rock 'n' roller student who swaps the campus for a
friend's conservative farm. Sounds like lame city/country culture clash comedy to me. All L'Cls.
I The Story of Out .Iu (12) (Zhang Yimou. China. 1992) Gong Li. Lei Lao Fheng. Ge Zhijun. 100 mins. Zhang makes a departure from the opulent beauty of Ju Dun and Raise the Red Lantern with this documentary-style tale of a shy. pregnant woman who refuses to accept the injustice dealt out to her husband. Again the role of women in society is highlighted and again Gong [J is superb as her resilience is pitted against the ttnfceling authorities. A masterly performance. lidinburgh: Royal Museum.
I Suburban Commando (PG) (Butt Kennedy. (S. 1991) Hulk Hogan. Christopher Lloyd. Shelley Duval. Lan'y Miller. 91 mins. Professional wrestler and over-the-top star Hulk
Hogan is Shep Ramsey. an intergalactic crusader
titatooned on Earth. whose heroic deeds are
threatened by the arrival of a pair of alien bounty hunters. Silly plot and cheapo special effects aside. enough laughs are milked out of the situation to make for a relatively painless cinema sitting. lidinburgh: MGM.
I Surf llinias (PG) (Neal Israel. (is. 1993) tit-nie Reyes Jr. Leslie Nielsen. Rob Schneider. 'l‘wo Asian-American surf bums discover they are rightful heirs to the throne of an island kingdom in the South (‘hina Seas. and -.o set about spearheading a rebellion against its evil tyrant. Low on action. low on comedy: ifever there was an argument against US domination of UK
; cinema screens this is it. Strathclyde: Cannon. ()dcon Ayr. ' I Tampopo (18) (Juzo ltami. Japan. 1986)
'l‘sutomo Yamazaki. Nobuko Miyamoto. l 14 mins. Splendid comedy in which the renovation
of a run-down noodle parlour becomes an epic.
Western-style adventure in the manner of The Magnificent Seven. Along the way there are various skits on the Japanese attitude to food and
culinary etiquette. as well as a truly sexy scene involving an egg yolk. For sustained comic impetus this is a splendid effort. heartily
recommended to anyone who enjoys food. or sex. or both. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I three Colours: Blue (15) (Krzysztof Kieslowski. France. 199.1) Juliette Binoche. Benoit Regent. ('harlotte Very. 100 mins. A young woman tries to isolate herself from
1 friends and any notion of affection following the
death of her composer husband and child in a car crash. but she cannot escape from the fragments of his unfinished composition. in which she played a major part. An expressive and symbolic film that is also emotionally satisfying. Binoche‘s award-winning performance. in a film of profound beauty. is the best of her career. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I tombstone (15) (George P. Cosmatos. US. 1993) Kurt Russell. Val Kilmer. Sam Elliott. Bill Paxton. 129 mins. Events before. during and after the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral with a reasonably big name cast depicting the actions of the Earp brothers. Doc Holliday er al. Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and marries novice hooker Alabama within a matter of hours. then the lovebirds find themselves on the run with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealing cameos and writer Quentin Tarantino's verbal set-pieces fire this excellent movie. the epitome of disposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I ‘I’ru:t(15) (Hal Hartley. US. 1990) Adrienne Shelly. Martin Donovan. Men’itt Nelson. 90 mins. 1n suburban Middle America. a rebellious high-school dropout (Shelly) leaves home after causing her father's fatal heart attack by announcing she's pregnant. By chance. she meets the dangerous but intelligent Matthew. who has also rebelled and lost his job. A highly unusual black comedy with several unexpected twists from the writer/director of The Unbelievable Truth. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Undercover Blues (12) (Herbert Ross. US. 1993) Kathleen Turner. Dennis Quaid. Fiona Shaw. 90 mins. On holiday on maternity leave. a husband and wife spy team are forced back into working mode (with baby in tow) when various bad guys turn up on the scene. A disgraceful waste of talent. a former killer. tamed by his late wife. but pressed into joining a bounty hunt which takes him to the town of Big Whiskey and into the presence of its sadistic sheriff (Hackman). A darkly disturbing western which destroys the genre's traditional notions of clear-cut good and evil. instead presenting violent acts as physically and psychologically painful for victim and
pe trator alike. Edinburgh: Cameo.

A young Frenchman at the turn of the century falls in love with a mysterious member of a theatrical troupe. only to lose her and his adolescence. A successful naturalised American lives happily with his gay lover in Manhattan until pressure from his parean in Taiwan forces him to marry a young Chinese artist in need of a green card. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Wings Of Desire (15) (Wim Wenders. W. Germany .1987) Bruno Ganz. Otto Sander. Solveig Dommartin. Peter Falk. 127 mins. Restless angel Ganz on duty over Berlin takes a tip from American movie star and fomaer angel Falk on the possibilities of crossing over. and follows his mentor‘s path to consummate his relationship with beautiful circus acrobat Dommartin. Gorgeous black-and-white photography and a sensitive feel for the people and places of Berlin grace this thematically rich and uncharacteristically optimistic slice of Wenders cnchantrnent. Highly recommended. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Written on the Wind (PG) (Douglas Sirk. US. 1956) Lauren Bacall. Robert Stack. Dorothy Malone. Rock Hudson. 99 mins. A fine film and one of Hollywood's best ever rnelodramas.
