Excellent performances all round. particularly Paxton as the over-zealous. but not wholly innocent. Southern sheriff holding his own against the boys from LA. Glasgow: Grosvenor. Edinburgh: Cameo. I m (PG) (Sally Potter. UK. 1992) Tilda Swinton. Billy Zane. Quentin Crisp. 92mins. A male Elizabethan courtier begins a joumey of self-discovery that involves four centuries and a sex change. Swinton's simple but unique beauty captures the androgyny of the perfect Everyman/woman. while director Potter creates from Virginia Woolf's novel a humorous and visually splendid succession of episodes that is a constant joy to watch. Basil Radford. 84 mins. A London borough discovers an ancient charter and declares its independence and exemption from rationing. Career criminal Butch Hayes (Costner) springs himself from the pen and takes a young boy hostage; pursued by a grizzled Texas Ranger (Eastwood) and a criminologist (Dem). he forms a close relationship with his captive. who begins to enjoy an adventure previously denied him. Unfortunately overlong. due to too many plot strands. there are still enough personal demons present to give it a compelling edge. General release. I The Piano (15) (Jane Campion. Australia/New Zealand. 1993) Holly Hunter. Sam Neill. Harvey Keitel. 120 mins. Jane Campion‘s masterpiece follows mute Scotswoman Ada (Hunter) as she travels to 19th century New Zealand with her piano and daughter to enter into an arranged marriage. Soon she begins a passionate and erotic affair with her illiterate neighbour as the , means of regaining her treasured instrument. Middleweight boxing champ Jake La Motta finds it difficult to sustain his early success and as his career fades. he declines into a travesty of his former self. De Niro's stunning physical presence dominates Scorsese's savagely bleak study of self-destructive machisrno. Fife: New Picture House. I The Rania: attire Day (U) (James Ivory. UK. 1993) Anthony Hopkins. Emma Thompson. James Fox. 134 mins. A butler reminisces on the pre—WWZ days he spent in Darlington Hall. when he turned a blind eye to his employer's dealings with the Nazis and his own feelings for the housekeeper. I Reservoir Dogs (18) (Quentin Tarantino. US. 1992) Harvey Keitel. Tim Roth. Michael Madsen. 100 mins. A gang of hoods. known only to each other by colour-coded nicknames. meets at an abandoned warehouse to figure how out their rigorously planned heist went so drastically wrong. The best debut in years from writer-director Tarantino. whose stylish violence seduces the audience into complicity. Brilliant in every sense of the word. Glasgow: Odeon. MGM Parkhead. I Revenge (18) (Tony Scott. US. 1990) Kevin Costner. Anthony Quinn. Madelaine Stowe. 124 mins. Costner plays an ex-fighter pilot sojurning in Mexico with Mexican millionaire buddy Quinn. and managing to violate his friend's trust by falling passionately in love with his young wife Stowe. When hubby exacts a brutal revenge on both of them. our Kev vows to get his own back by all means necessary. Sub-Hemingway tosh. with the thinnest of narratives quite overloaded by all the stylistic paraphemalia fortner adman Scott can muster. The result is stunningly banal. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Robin Hood: Men In T191113 (PG) (Mel Brooks. US. 1993) Cary Elwes. Richard Lewis. Roger Rees. 104 mins. Two years too late. along comes Mel's version of the Sherwood legend. hobbling on its comedy zimmer-frame. The plot is what everyone expects. the gags are what no one deserves. Stuck for ideas of his own. the director can‘t even raise a smile ripping off others. Terrible. terrible. terrible. General release.

I Ruby It Paradise (15) (Victor Nunez. US. 1992) Ashley Judd. Todd l‘ield. Bentley Mitchum. 114 mins. Ruby Lee Gissing (Judd) leaves the drudgery of her Tennessee borne and heads for West Florida. where she finds work. love and friendship. What could have been dismissed as another ‘women's movie‘ is heightened by its perceptive depiction of self- discovery and a star-making performance by newcomer Judd. Glasgow: (ll-'1‘. (‘uhan emigrant Pacino builds a vast Miami crime empire on foundations of cocaine. but his life is destroyed when he loses control of his own indulgence. Overheating moralising dominates this sweeping gangster saga. w ith stylish violent highlights the De Paltna trademark as ever. Edinburgh: MGM.
I Sea 0' love ( 18) (Harold Becker. I'S. 1989) Al Pacino. Ellen Barkin. John (iocxlman. Michael Rooker. l 18 mins. Pacino. a homicide detective in search of a murderer whose crimes seem to be connected with the personal ads. sets up a date with single mother Barkin. and. although attracted to her. begins to suspect that she is the killer. The plot may he on the creaky side. but the performances from both leads are spot-on. the dialogue and the sex scenes are remarkably realistic. However. the film is more likely to be remembered for its humour than for its tension. Edinburgh: MGM.
