The Standard Life Princes Street Mile is one of only two famous running mile
events worldwide, the other being held ‘
in Fifth Avenue, New York. In Edinburgh the starting gun and the finishing line are outside the Balmorai Hotel, with competitors having to flip a turn by Castle Street.
Six miles, six races but there’s a multitude of admired names on show. Keep an eye out in the international Wheelchair Mile for Paralyrnplc triple Cold medallist Heinz Frei from Switzerland and Chris ilallam, Britain’s bronze medallist at the Barcelona Paralympics. in the Past Master’s Mile, Eamonn Coghlan from ireland will attempt to be the first forty-year- old to run a mile in under four minutes.
The second fastest female runner in the world over 1500 metres, Sonia D’Sullivan will be participating, along with Ellen van Langen and Scotland’s Yvonne Murray, while the Men’s race will include Steve Cram, Paul iiuto the new world 800 metres champion, the world steepiechase champion Moses Kiptanui and other well-known title holders.
