I Scala TV Event Part of the Filmhouse‘s September celebration of the recently deceased Scala cinema in London is this double bill of 60s television. I Scent of I llama 15) (Martin Brest. US. 1992) Al Pacino. Chris O'Donnell. James Rebhom. 156 mins. A blind. alcoholic ex- serviceman and a scholarship college boy spend Thanksgiving Weekend in New York and find themselves in a series of funny and moving adventures which finally lead them to come to terms with their true selves. Overlong in its opening and closing scenes. this is still one terrific movie. with what is possibly Pacino's best performance in a distinguished career. Fife: Robins.
I m (18) (Derek Jarman. UK. 1976) 86 mins. This early Jarman work. a homo-erotic piece about an early Christian martyr. is unusual in its use of Latin for dialogue. Filmed
naturalistically. it succeeds in meshing its themes. so that it is effective as a whole and on its various levels. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I 813.0 (15) (Steve Jodrell. Australia. 1987) Deborra-Lee Fumess. Tony Barry. Simone Buchanan. 92 mins. Asta (Fumess) is an independent barrister and a biker. whose motorcycle breaks down while she is travelling through the outback. She finds herself in a small town where a conspiracy of silence is covering up the gang-rape of a young girl. Asta takes on her case and becomes locked in a battle with the sheriff and the whole of the town's male community. One of the most warm-hearted romantic comedies to emerge from Hollywood in years. again proving the talent of Nora Ephron. who wrote When Harry Met Sally. Newspaper reporter Ryan hears a radio talk show which features recently widowed architect Hanks. She‘s sure they are made for each other. but the whole of the United States lies between them. Shazza moves into a modem New York appartment block. which has been the site of several murders. the perpetrator of which has been captured — along with several other indiscretions - by the in-house surveillance system. Self-censorship has pretty much done for the much-touted sex scenes in this supremely empty pile of old poo passing itself off as a ‘psychosexual mystery'. General release.

Don't expect the plusher production values of The Commitments with the latest screen version of Roddy Doyle‘s novels; instead. enjoy a hilarious comedy that never loses sight of its human heart. Sharon Curley announces her pregnancy but not the name of the father. setting the small Barrytown community into uproar. but bringing her family closer together. A gem. Glasgow: Odeon. I So. I Married All he WOHIS) (Mike Myers. US. 1993) The Wayne half of Wayne's World writes. directs and stars in this domestic serial killer spoof which hits the mark fairly often. A special preview screening before its October release. Fife: Robins.
I Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky. USSR. 1979) Alexander Kaidanovsky. Anatoly Solonitsyn. Nikolai Grinko. 161 mins. Tarkovsky‘s allusive adaptation of the Strugatsky novel about the aftermath of an alien visitation. The stalker is a man who is prepared to act as a guide through the contaminated area. but the director uses the Zone as a locale of very human desires and projections. Visually splendid and intellectually provocative. Stalker is one of Tarkovsky's most accessible films. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I The Story of Hill Ju (12) (Zhang Yirnou. China. 1992) Gong Li. Lei Lao Fheng. Ge Zhijun. 100 mins. Zhang makes a departure from the opulent beauty of Ju Don and Raise the Red Lantern with this documentary-style tale of a shy. pregnant woman who refuses to accept the injustice dealt out to her husband. Again the role
of women in society is highlighted and again
Gong Li is superb as her resilience is pitted against the unfeeling authorities. A masterly performance. Fife: Adam Smith. Robins.

Dancefloor hopeful Scott Hastings incurs the wrath of the Australian Dance Federation by using his own steps in competition. loses his partner and his friends. but finds love and artistic integrity with the local wallflower. The ultimate feelgood movie. it is crammed with colour. glitter. music and spectacle. Glasgow: GFT.

The film of the video game featuring ltalian pipe-menders plumbs new and tedious depths. In a parallel world. they try to rescue a princess from a lizard-like baddie. but our heroes are lost in over-designed sets and variable special effects. More holes than a drain-cover. I Teenage Mutant lllnja Turtles 3 (PG) (Stuan Gillard. US. 1992) Elias Koteas. Paige Turco. Stuart Wilson. Another Turtles movie! A prospect as appealing as a pizza slice reheated for the third time. This time. they're back in 17th century Japan in order to save April. Fresh locations won't stall the diminishing returns as kid's fadish attentions have turned elsewhere. ~ln a straight reptile vs reptile battle in the summer cinemas. those turtles are going to squashed under the dinosaurs feet. ninja skills or not. First. the Schwarzenegger cyborg is sent back in time to 198-1 on a mission to kill the future resistance leader‘s mother. Then. in a reprogrammed role that says much about his changed image since the first movie. Arnie becomes the underdog fighting to protect mother and child from another more advanced cyborg. Great sci-fi shenanigans with escalating budget. Central: MacRobert.

1991 ) Susan Sarandon. Geena Davis. Harvey Keitel. Michael Madsen. 129 mins. The buddy/road movie genres are turned on their heads as Sarandon and Davis grasp the steering wheel and head off leaving a trail of murder and mayhem in their wake. ()n one level. the film is the critical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the cover of Time magazine; just as importantly. it‘s an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central perfonnanccs. I Unforgiven (15) (Clint Eastwood. US. 1992) Clint Eastwood. Gene Hackman. Morgan Freeman. 123 mins. Clint returns to the saddle as a former killer. tamed by his late wife. but pressed intojoining a bounty hunt which takes him to the town of Big Whiskey and into the presence of its sadistic sheriff (Hackman). A darkly disturbing western which destroys the genre's traditional notions of clear-cut good and evil. instead presenting violent acts as physically and psychologically painful for victim and perpetrator alike. Two heavy metal dorks hit the big time when their public access cable show is snapped up by a greedy TV exec for national primetime. Crammed full of TV and film pastiches. this US phenomenon has far more hits than misses. while Wayne and Garth revel in an even wackier vocabulary than cinematic first cousins Bill and Ted. I Wings Of Desire (15) (Wim Wenders. W. Germany .1987) Bruno Ganz. Otto Sander. Solveig Dommartin. Peter Falk. 127 mins. Restless angel Ganz on duty over Berlin takes a tip from American movie star and former angel Falk on the possibilities of crossing over. and follows his mentor's path to consummate his relationship with beautiful circus acrobat Dommartin. Gorgeou's black-and-whitc photography and a sensitive feel for the people and places of Berlin grace this thematically rich and uncharacteristically optimistic slice of Wenders enchantment. Rambling would-be epic of anti-establishment America. with mellow visuals loosely draped on a plot in which Frechette flees accusations of police murder. steals a plane. takes in the sights of the Nevada desert. picks up Halprin. makes whoopee with her in Death Valley. then returns home to face the music.
