Madrid in the l860s. and life is turbulent under the decadent Queen Isabella. particularly for swordsman Don Jaime de Astarloa. who is asked by the sultry Adela to be her teacher. Jeanne Tripplehom. Gene Hackman. ISS mins. John Grisham's best-selling novel undergoes a few changes to become a star- studded. but somewhat overlong thriller. with Cruise well cast and convincing as the young graduate lawyer. seduced by a less-than-legal Memphis law firm. However. a uniformly excellent supporting cast can't hide the lapses in pace and implausible narrative jumps that are made in the name of compact plotting. See preview. General release. I The Fisher Kill. (15) (Terry Gilliam. US. l99l) Robin Williams. Jeff Bridges. Amanda Plummer. Mercedes Ruehl. 137 mins. A suicidal former radio DJ (Bridges) and a drop-out former professor of medieval history go in search of the Holy Grail in contemporary New York. The visual splendour of Gilliam‘s previous movies Time Bandits and Bamn Munchausen is more restrained here. but the blend of myth. satire and

romance is strong. Unfortunately. the wonderful central performances by Williams and Bridges are let down by a cop-out. up-beat ending. Edinburgh: Cameo.

A horror picture with a well constructed plot. strong characters. haunting images and special effects that actually serve the storyline. I Not Shot: Part Door (12) (Jim Abrahams. US. I993) Charlie Sheen. Lloyd Bridges. Valeria Golino. 87 mins. More cinema parody than Cinema Paradiso. this time it's boys' own action movies that are in the sights. as Charlie Sheen tries to rescue the POWs from the Gulf. The jokes race past so quickly that if one stumbles and falls. another hurdles it immediately. If you're familiar with the targets. it‘s a satisfying enough sitting. General release.
