IN THE BUNKER
Surely a sign that the cold war is well and truly over is when the government starts selling off its nuclear bunkers, either that or the powers-that-be don’t give a toss if their Scottish counterparts fry (probably closer to the truth). One recent such sell-off was a large bunker out by East Calder, which has recently been opened as a new club venue, imaginatively called ‘The Bunker’. The venue is quite impressive and plans to function as a run-of-the-mill night club/disco, with occasional big one-off events possibly in the pipeline.
When I visited it the venue still had considerable work to be done, with carpeting (obligatory black) still to be laid and a good few coats of paint still to be applied (probably black). Work was about to start on a car park as well, which is a definite requirement due to its out-of-town location. The site of the club must be the biggest problem for them, though this didn’t particularly perturb the manager Colin Grieve when 1 spoke to him. ‘We are quite out of the way, but there’s a big enough untapped market around here. People aren’t going to have to travel far afield as they do now, and they will
have a guaranteed good night out on their doorstep.’
Another niche in the market it could well fill would be tor large one-oft rave events (what with recent licensing changes possiny killing off the livingston Forum as a viable venue), especially if the Bunker is successful in getting all-night licences (like their recent opening night). Though to have events as big as the Forum they would need to get working on extending the space.
Expansion is exactly what Colin has in mind, ‘The capacity at the moment is 1400, but this is only stage one and we plan to work down the way (only the top floor is operational at the moment). We’re going to expand by opening up more as we go along. We have three floors altogether and as well as opening up more space for club use, there is the possibility of one of the floors being used at some point in the future as a leisure facility.
Whatever the licensing board’s decision, it will no doubt be a welcome addition for locals and save them a good few quid in travelling expenses. (Joe Lampard)
