I Sommersby (12) (Jon Amiel. Us. 1993) Richard Gere. Jodie Foster. Bill Pullman. 114 mins. The plot of The Return of Martin Guerre goes wandering for a few years before emerging from the mists of the American Civil War in the shape of Jack Sommersby (Gere). who's not quite the man his wife (Foster) remembers. Hugely influential and successful space epic: a modem fairytale with laser swords. Glasgow: Odeon.
I Super Mario Bros (PG) (Rocky Morton/Annabel Jankel. US. 1993) Bob Hoskins. John Leguizamo. Dennis Hopper. 105 mins. The film of the video game featuring Italian pipe-menders plumbs new and tedious depths. In a parallel world. they try to rescue a princess from a lizard-like baddie. but our heroes are lost in over~designed sets and variable special effects. More holes than a drain-cover. General release.
I Sure Fire (15) (Jon Jost. US. 1990) Tom Blair. Kristi llager. Robert Emst. 83 mins. Blair's portrayal of mid-western good 01‘ boy Wes fills the screen and the film: a man who's more than willing to generously help out his family and friends. but expects some sort of payback in return. His obsession with developing his home town in Utah into a paradise for Californian retirees eventually leads to a shocking confrontation with his son. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Swallows and Amazon: (U) (Claude Whatham. UK. 1974) Virginia McKenna. Ronald Fraser. Sophie Neville. 92 mins. The adventures of four children in the lake district of the 1920s. ldyllic screen incarnation of the Arthur Ransome that is very much an adult's idea of what children‘s entertainment should be. About as exciting as a steady downpour of drizzle. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Tango (l5) (Patrice Leconte. France. 1993) Richard Bohringer. Philippe Noiret. Thierry Lhcnnitte. 88 mins. The wife ofa pilot is having an affair. so the advice from his judge uncle is to enlist the services of a professional hitman. A provocative. breezy jest of a film that is unlike the tautly controlled. intimate drama of Monsieur Hire and The Hairdresser 's Husband. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I teenage Mutant lllnia turtles 3 (PG) (Stuart Gillard. US. 1992) Elias Koteas. Paige Turco. Stuart Wilson. Another Turtles movie! A prospect as appealing as a pizza slice reheated for the third time. This time. they're back in 17th century Japan in order to save April. Fresh locations won't stall the diminishing returns as kids fadish attentions have turned elsewhere. ~1n a straight reptile vs reptile battle in the summer cinemas. those turtles are going to squashed under the dinosaurs feet. ninja skills or not. General release.
I Three lllnia Kid: (U) (Jon Turteltaub. US. 1993) Victor Wong. Michael Treanor. Chad Power. 84 mins. Three mini-martial artists use their grandfather's training to help their FBI agent dad nail a baddie. Sort of Home Alone meets the Turtles (minus the suits) as the youngsters in the audience cheer their on-screen heroes as they kick the poo~poo out of a startlingly inept adult world. Borders: Kingsway. Strathclyde: Motherwell.
I Three of M ( 18) (Yurek Bogayevicz. US. 1993) William Baldwin. Kelly Lynch. Sherilyn Fenn. 110 mins. Girl meets girl. Girl loses girl. Girl hires gigolo to woo girl then break her heart. so she'll come running back. Not your average Hollywood love triangle. and certainly commendable for bringing a relaxed. comic attitude to sexuality that is normally ghettoised. Edinburgh: Odeon.
I To Kill A Mocklnurlrd (PG) (Robert Mulligan. US. 1962) Gregory Peck. Mary Badham. Philip Alford. Brock Peters. 129 mins. Sturdy film adaptation of the classic Harper Lee novel won an Oscar for Peck as a liberal lawyer in the Deep South defending a black man accused of rape. The material is delicately handled as he attempts to explain the situation to his children. and Duvall makes his screen debut as their friend. a retarded man. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I You antl Jerry: The Movie (U) (Phil Roman. US. 1992) With the voices of Richard Kind. Dana Hill. Charlotte Rae. 84 mins. That's right: ‘with the voices of‘. The world's greatest cat and
mouse act not only talk. but sing and dance their way through their first feature. as they cope with leaving home and being out on the streets. It will divert the kids. certainly. but life-long fans will be disappointed to see (and hear) these cultural icons expand beyond sublime five-minute burst of mayhem. Odeons: Glasgow. Edinburgh. Ayr. All UCls. I Tous les Matins du Monde (12) (Alain Comeau. France. 1992) Gerard Depardieu. Guillaume Depardieu. Anne Brochet. 114 mins. The story of 17th century viol de gamba virtuoso Marin Marais-(told in flashback using Depardieu pere etflls) acts as a background for conflicts between music and musician. art and artiste. Hugely successful on home territory. it marks an impressive debut for young Guillaume. who's likely to set hearts racing from Toulouse to Tollcross. Glasgow: GET. I Tutti Fnrttl (Tony Smith. UK. 1987) Robbie Coltrane. Emma Thompson. Maurice Roeves. Richard Wilson. All six episodes of John Byrne's classic TV drama about a Scottish rock 'n' roll band. The Majestics. With intervals. Sat 7 Aug only. Glasgow: GET. I "2: Battle And Hull (Phil Joanou. US. 1988) Bono. The Edge. Adam Clayton. Larry Mullen. 90 mins. U2 on their worldwide Joshua Tree tour find themselves exploring the great tradition of American popular music as they record with BB. King and a Harlem Choir. before taking a trip to the Sun Studios in Memphis where Elvis first recorded. Intriguing mix of stining live footage and intimate documentary. capturing a band in transition. though perhaps just a little too much of the concen material. Edinburgh: UCl. I Used People (12) (Beeban Kidron. US. 1992) Shirley MacLaine. Marcello Mastroianni. Jessica Tandy. 115 mins. A BBC schooling for director Kidron (Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit) has perhaps saved this amiable tale of quirky domesticity from becoming your usual sentimental slop. A widow is picked up at her hubby's funeral and begins a late late show romance. while around her disparate individuals go through the trials and tribulations of life. A bit ofa grower. Central: MacRobert. Fife: Adam Smith. I The Vanishing (15) (George Sluizer. US. 1993) Jeff Bridges. Kiefer Sutherland. Nancy Travis. 110 mins. Throwing subsequent credibility out of the window. Dutch director Sluizer goes to Hollywood to remake his own classic. but agrees to a screenplay that removes all of the subtleties of his original chiller. Boyfriend searches for girlfriend who disappeared at shopping centre. only to come into contact with abductor — that much is the same. but one can only compare the disasterous American decisions with the elements that made them want to do it again in the first place. Glasgow: Odeon. I Vincent and Theo (15) (Robert Altman. UK/Netherlands. 1990) Tim Roth. Paul Rhys. 140 mins. The obsession with Van Gogh's art and madness manifests itself again as Robert Altman ponderously and at undue length traces Vincent's frustrated career and working relationship with brother Theo. Tim Roth plays the artist as a demented clown. stomping off for a day's painting to Gabriel Yared's thrashing soundtrack and eating as much paint as he gets on canvas. Cinematically it might have its moments. but essentially this is art history as a tabloid journalist might see it. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Wild West (15) (David Attwood. UK. 1992) Naveen Andrews. Sarita Choudhury. Ronny Jhutti. 85 mins. You've got to have hopes to survive life in Southall. even if you‘re up against friends. family and the British record industry just because you're the world's first Asian country and western band. Very funny. continuously upbeat British comedy that takes an unusual look at an odd slice of life. This year's Commitments. Glasgow: GF'T. Fife: Adam Smith. I Withnall & I (15) (Bruce Robinson. UK. 1987) Paul McGann. Richard E. Grant. Richard Griffiths. 107 mins. Two out-of-work actors surviving 1969 London giro squalor take a break in a picturesque Lake District cottage. where one of them suffers the attentions of the ageing homosexual owner. Reasonably entertaining British comedy with a tendency to rely on the all-too-easy targets of drug-taking and gay stereotyping for its humour. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Yeelen (PG) (Soulemanye Cisse. Mali. 1987) lssiaka Kane. Aouta Sangare. Ballarnoussa Keita. 105 mins. A young Bambarra boy steals a sacred object from the tribe. an act which breaks centuries of tradition and leaves his father carrying the burden of atonement. The boy runs off in search of a missing uncle. but tribal shame still hangs over him. Completely enthralling and accessible film. whose framework of tribal rituals and mythologies conjures an innocently magical alternative universe. An enchanting trip through the epic narrative style of a remote but not inhospitable culture. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
