At a time of severe famine in 19th century Sweden. a poor farmer kills a rich neighbour's ox in order to feed his family. but eventually is transported to a hard labour camp. A mix of moral dilemmas and costume drama. this directorial debut by Bergman's celebrated cinematographer is a rather more profound than depressing experience. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Afte an hour of increasingly weird sitcom antics. the film changes gear for a distinctly grim ending.

Scooting otit of town with the money and the job undone. he bumps into the real killer. and his problems begin. A slick tale of double. triple and quadruple dealing that adds a comic twist to the tight Blood Simple atmosphere. Glasgow: (irosvenor. Left on her own in her sister's fiat for a few days. a sexually repressed young woman gradually deteriorates towards complete mental breakdown. Polanski's first English language movie remains one of his best. a genuinely disturbing exploration of intense paranoia and claustrophobia that unflinchingly picks at the audience's deepest neuroses. I A River Runs Through It (PG) (Robert Redford. US. 1992) Craig Sheffer. Brad Pitt. Tom Skerritt. 12-1 mins. A fine. lyrical piece by director Redford describing the love and loyalty of two contrasting brothers in Montana early this century. Based on Noririan Maclean's semi- autobiographical novel. it fuses the Scots Presbyterian lifestyle of American settlers with an true understanding of nature. Wonderful performances. beautiful photography: altogether a perfectly crafted film about human relationships. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

This story of an lllV+ photographer who has unsafe sex with both his male and female lovers is much more than an ‘AlDS movie': it is a staggering paean to being alive and in love. This is life and death stuff: life. as it is really lived on an irresponsible edge; death. as tragically took actor/director/ writer Collard only days before his movie swept the French Cesar Awards.
