The merry making features the good citizens of Stirling. entertaining Mary Queen of Scots with 16th Century music song and dance. Visitors are invited to participate in the revelry as they cast off the cares of the day. Things get a bit less happy for the play No Hope of Freedom. during which Mary looks back at her time on the throne of Scotland. reflecting on the relationships and evean which led to her exile in England and eventual execution. During the play. Mary sees herself as a young woman dining with David Rizzio her beloved confidant and advisor. As they share their love of poetry. Rizzio is confronted by his murderers and Mary (and the audience) is forced to watch his brutal slaughter.

Take your cameras to this wonderful open-air street market where all the stall holders wear period Victorian costume. Crafts. claymores (ornamental) and cream teas are among the goods on sale as well as horse-drawn carriage rides. if you fancy some serious photography. the best time to arrive is about noon.

Whoop-de-doo! its fabulous Radio One. commin‘ at ya live on stage from llam to 12.30pm (but the real fun starts at 10am. so don't be late boys and girls!) with the irascibie Neal James at the controls. ably supported by Smiley Miley and his Mileage Game and those lovely Bits and Pieces. Oh the bliss of it all. Special guests for Dundee: bubbly Sonia with John Sekahada. Oh you lucky Dundonians!

I EDINBURGH RENAISSANCE BAND Sun 4. 2.30pm. Craigmiliar Castle. 2% miles SE of Edinburgh on the A68. £1.20 (60p). Castle open 9.30am—6.30pm (2—6.30pm Sundays). Enjoy a selection of popular Scottish songs from the 15th and 16th centuries played on period instruments. Suitably. although the castle was built in 1374. it was being extended to include courtyards and gardens. enclosed in one and a quarter acres. at the time these songs were being written.
I GARDEN OPEN DAY Sun 11.2—5pm. Hill of Tarvit. by Cupar. Fife. (2 miles south of Cupar on the A916) Garden only: £1 (50p); House and Garden: £2.80 (£1.40). The National Trust for Scotland have a policy of planting their gardens in the style that would have been in fashion when the house was built. This can pose problems at their older properties. Luckily for the head gardener. Hill of Tarvit was extensively re-built in 1906 during a period of exploration by botanists. so he is pretty much able to let his imagination run riot. The house was purpose built to house a collection of French. Chippendale and
Vernacular furniture. Dutch paintings. Flemish tapestries and Chinese porcelain and bronzes. There's not much in the way of places to dump the kiddies out of harm’s way. but you can tire them out with a walk up to the hill-top folly through the woodland. ifyou've time. the head gardener is organising a guided walk of the gardens on Tue 6. at 3pm.

Second and Third kiddies prizes will bejudged at about 11.30am. but stick around and you could show them how to really go about building that golden schloss of your dreams. Bring your own bucket. spade. JCB and industrial power tools.
I SHEARING, WOOL AND SPINNING DEMONSTRATION Sat 3/Sun 4. 10am—5pm. Almond Valley Heritage Centre. Livingston Mill. 0506 414957. SMT Bus 27 from central Edinburgh. £1.50 (75p). Each morning and afternoon over these two days (phone for times) there will be a demonstration of the complete process of getting wool off a sheep's back. carding the fleece and spinning it into yarn. The centre is a heartin recommended day out for families. open every day. There’s loads to see and do on the sixteen-acre site. with horse drawn cart rides around the outlying fields. a nature trail to ramble round. swing park and playground to dump the kids. while you go for a cup of tea at the Farmhouse Kitchen cafe. (We have yet to have a first-hand report of the cafe here at The List. send your opinions to Days Out at our Edinburgh Office.) if it’s raining. there's still the mill. byres and museum building.

I FALLS OF CLYDE OPEN DAY Sun 4. 1—5pm. Falls of Clyde. New Lanark. Free. (Audio visual presentation: 50p/40p). Go with a ranger up to the falls for £1.50. ()555 665262. Although the visitors' centre is open 10am—5pm every weekday and l—5pm on weekends. during the Open Day the power station above the falls is shut down. providing even more spectacular views. These are certainly the best waterfalls in Lowland Scotland. it's a gentle 40- minute stroll up to the falls through the 70-hectare Scottish Wildlife Trust parkland with vestiges of ancient woodland. along the Clyde. Spend the rest
of the day in New Lanark. the renovated model village from the industrial Revolution. I FESTIVAL OF FLOWERS AND MUSIC Fri 9-Sun ll. 10.30am-5.30piii. Culzean Castle. 12 miles south of Ayr on the A719. £3.50 (£1.70). There's always lots to do at Culzean. but over these three days there is the added enjoyment of the flower and music festival. filling the castle with colours. fragrances and sweet sounds. On Sunday 1 i. there is the added attraction of a Sheepdog Competition on the events field 2—5pm. I POWER BOAT RACING Fri 2--Sun 4. from noon. Dunoon Promenade. Dunooii. Free. ROUND BRITAIN YACHTING EVENT: Wed Ill—Sat 1. Leith Docks. Free. Twenty-I
tour yachts are taking part in this round-Britain sailing rally, the iirst of its kind to circumnavigate Mainland Britain. During the seven weeks oi the rally, the yachts will be calling at eleven ports and sailing some 1600 nautical miles. They will arrive in leith on the 14th and be berthed at the Cruise Liner Terminal, all ralted up together. They will be leaving from Cranton on the 17th, alter exiting through the giant lock normally reserved tor ships, and setting oil from the harbour at 2pm. From there they will be sailing up to Buckie, from where the more intrepid among the party will be going round the top oi Caithness to Ullapool, but the wimps will be dodging down through the Caledonian Canal (see photo) to Craobh Haven.
