I Jools Holland Big Band The Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 7pm. 10pm SOLD OUT. £8. First show is sold out. but a second show has been added. More likely to be r‘n’b than jazz from the ex- Squeeze pianist and The Tube frontman, but a lively enough opener to handsel the new venue (see Agenda). There will be lots of fingers crossed that it comes up to acoustic requirements. since much of the most exciting music of the festival is scheduled to take place here.

I Stan Tracey Dctet The Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 7pm. £8. One of the greats of British jazz. Stan had belated major- label recognition from Blue Note this year. who are now putting out some of his back catalogue. including the famed Under Milk Wood Suite with Scottish saxman Bobby Wellins. who is featured at the M. U. Club on Wed 7. Tracey‘s excellent Octet features the likes of Peter King and Art Themen on saxophones, and young trumpeter Gerard Presencer. I Jack Bruce The Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 10pm. £10. A very rare chance to catch the legendary bass player, who emerged to international stardom from the 60s Glasgow music scene. See preview. I Blues Cruise P. S. I Kevin Macltenzie Quartet M. U. Basement Jazz Club at The 13th Note. Glassford Street. 9.30pm. £5. The guitarist‘s outfit is one of the best bands on the Scottish scene.

I Janamba! Bell Street and Candleriggs. In a new development for the festival. these streets will be closed to traffic. and given over to a wide variety ofjazz. Latin and African music throughout the day, in the hope of creating a more festive
atmosphere than has been possible in the past.

I Dionne Warwick Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. 2 Sauchiehall Street. 8pm. £15—£20. The soul singer replaces pianist Oscar Peterson. victim of a stroke which has temporarily halted his performing career. I‘m not sure what Ms Warwick's jazz credentials are. but
she is a fine singer in her own field.
I Joe Pass and Martin Taylor The Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 2pm. £8. This stellar duo is a real gem for lovers of guitar and/or mainstream jazz. and a highly agreeable way to pass (no pun intended) an afternoon. Taylor-made for enjoyment. you might even say.
I Keith Tippett and Alex McGuire Hutcheson's Hall, lngram Street. 4pm. £5. The introduction of these smaller recitals of more adventurous improvised music is one of the most enterprising facets of the festival. and 1 hope they will not be passed over in the sheer weight of bigger names elsewhere. lascivlous slant to Dionne Warwick’s classic ‘Then
; Came You’ by re-titling it ‘Then You Came’; what it 3 doesn’t do is lay down her credentials for , headlining a concert in a jazz festival. Still, she is
a fine, sophisticated singer, and that is maybe
justification enough. Her latest album re-united her i with songwriters Bacharach and David, but the
i concert will span her entire repertoire.

I Chick Corea Quartet The Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 2pm. £10. A stellar late addition to the programme which you won‘t find in the festival brochure. l‘m no great fan of Corea‘s Elektric Band. but this quartet looks a different proposition, and features saxophonist Bob Berg. a man who has a considerable following himself. alongside the mighty John Patitucci on bass and drummer Cary Hovalr.
I John Surman and John Taylor Hutcheson's Hall. lngram Street. 4pm. £6. Pianist Taylor's duo with the saxophonist on his highly recommended Amhleside Days (Ah-Um) disc revealed the evocative, melodic
compositions. marvellously lucid improvisations and sheer sonic beauty which are the hallmark of both these great anists, and this recital could well be one of the real musical landmarks of the festival. They are supported by The Hamtov Trio from Rostov-on-Don. I Tommy Smith and The Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra The Fruitmarket. Albion Street. 7pm. £6. The saxophonist is the first Scot to be commissioned as Composer-in- Residence at the festival, and will unveil a new Suite for Jazz Orchestra based on Edwin Muir's poem Scotland is Winter in this concert. Another first for the festival. with a concert presented by Engender and devoted to emphasising the increasing influence of women in jazz. featuring the music of Cauld Blasters Karen Wimhurst and Anne Wood. and singers Sophie Bancroft, Flonna Duncan and Sylvia Hae. plus Gina Rae and Judy Greenwood. Sophie made the point recently that her new band with Gina is the first in which she has ever worked with another woman. and it is good to see signs that the male-dominated nature of the music is breaking down.
