A MIDSUMMER HIDHT’S DREAM
Scottish Ballet, King’s Tear
Edinburgh, Tue 4—Sat 8 May. Transposing Shakespeare’s tale of midsummer magic, spellbound lovers and blinded lust into a dance piece was last attempted by Frederick Ashton. Now Scottish Ballet has commissioned Bobert Cohan, ex- London Contemporary Dance Theatre, to choreograph a brave, dynamic and thoroughly modern production.
Using the bare essentials of plot, Cohan has concentrated on the nature of love and the collision between the natural and the civilised world. The set uses coloured light against two- dimensional flats and thick ribbon streamers, and traditional moves are infused with a wicked sense of
humour.
With costumes which resemble Julian Clary creations, The Beastie Boys and the Paris catwalk 1993, Norberto Chiesa’s designs are not subtle. Too much colour occasionally jars as the sickly pastel shades of lovers’ chiffon clashes with the deep red and green richly detailed body stockings worn by characters from the forest.
The set also detracts from the actual dancing. Mirrors echoing lovers’ confusion are concertinaed across the stage and a Dali-esque red mouth of a sofa on strings hangs above like a smirk. This means that the dancers need to work hard to make an impact. Luis Rodriguez as Puck moves like a piece of silk, while Anne Christie as Titania gives the character an impish charisma, yet other dancers sometimes appear stilted by it all.
Although tentative and occasionally self-conscious, Midsummer Night’s Dream is worth seeing for its unusual blend of the dramatic and the visual — and for some inspired dancing. (Beatrice Colin)
