SHIRLEY VALENTINE
Elaine C. Smith
Seen at The Village Theatre, East Kilbride. On tour.
St Joan of the Fitted Units triumphs again. Willy Russell’s urban fairy story about a 42-year-old housewife with a lost personality, a life in arrears and a boring husband, who runs away to a Greek island, has been re-iigged, revitalised and relocated to a kitchen somewhere in Glasgow.
Before the performance begins tonight, the theatre reverberates with the sound of high-pitched chatter from a full house of almost all women. They go on to laugh, clap, cry and sigh in equal measures and show just how precisely Shirley Valentine has captured the collective imagination.
In the starring and only role - unlike the film this is a monologue — is Elaine C. Smith. Stepping into the slippers of Pauline Collins can’t have been easy, but soon the twanging yawn of colloquial Glaswegian drowns out any earlier voices and Smith, looking dwarfed by a spotless fitted kitchen, is vehemently Shirley.
Designer Alan Wright has plumped for realism. In the first act, while anecdotes come thick and fast and Shirley ponders over the pronunciation of clitoris, she peels, slices and cooks chips, throws in a couple of eggs and actually makes dinner. We were impressed. The second half is set in a taverna beside the sea. Sipping retsina, Shirley digs her toes into real golden sand and the audience visibly swoons.
The direction by Alex Norton is simple, Smith lets the dialogue supply cues for movement, and lighting is used to contrast the harsh halogen of the kitchen with the amber sunset of the Greek beach.
A bitter-sweet pill, Russell’s script is rude, funny and very perceptive while disguising a profoundly feminist message. The producers and theatre managers haven’t ignored this and a Women’s Aid stand is present in the foyer of each performance.
This is an excellent production, well- paced, well-cast and with a resonance which will linger in the kitchens of suburbia long after the dishes are done. (Beatrice Colin)
