As Rick Astley was to Stock, Aitken and Waterman’s PWL label, so how- motion stance-spotters Spooky are to London’s pioneering progressive Cuerilla set-up. ’Scuse me, please? Well, remember how our Rick was the studio tea-lackey made good? For Spooky’s Duncan Forbes, the sudden ascent to recording artist ior his erstwhile employers was equally unexpected.
‘About a year ago’ he recalls ‘me and Charlie (Duncan’s co-Spookster) bought a sampler and tinkered about doing some dance stuii. At the time I was doing van sales ior Cuerilla so I dropped the tape in to Dick (sleazy Cuerllla supremo) and three weeks later he called me up to ask it he could put it out.’
llo wonder. With its distinctive Pixies vocal sample, and its meticulous grasp oi the kinetics oi dance-floor hypnosis, ‘Panlc’ was an instant club hit. Since then, this retiring London duo with a AAD ilxation have travelled to ‘The Land Cl 02’ and, more recently

This month, however, we get a whole eponymous album’s worth oi blissed- out trancey stuff to get you ghost- dancing down your local rainbow dome. This year’s Ultramarine, Orb, llarold Eno and Leitiield too, Spooky is an expressway to those inner sanctums oi yer mind you never knew existed. Eh, Duncan?
