I A Certain Ratio King Tut‘s Wah Wah
Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £6.
Benevolently watching over musical developments in their home city of Manchester like non-interventionist parents, AC R can rest assured that their white funk has been a major influence on their fellow citizens. Not that it matters to them — they‘re too busy in the creation of diverse dance songs as can be found on their new LP Up In Downsville.
I Motarosa (TBC), Nice'n‘Sleazy, Sauchiehall Street, 333 9637. 9pm.
I Glasgow Songwriters Cottiers, Hyndland

Edinburgh
I The Sundays and Butterfly Child Queen's ‘
Hall, South Clerk Street, 668 2019. So what have The Sundays got to show for two years out of the limelight? Merely an album which takes no noticeable strides from the model they perfected on their
first. No matter; Harriet has a voice that’s '
worth coming along to swoon to.

Glasgow
I Steve Forbert Old Athenaeum Theatre, Buchanan Street, 332 2333. 7pm. £7.50. Highly-regarded Amen'can country-rocker lugs his guitar in the direction of the List offices. Will we be allowed to sneak downstairs and watch him for free, we wonder?

I Paradise Lost and Cerebral Fix Cathouse, Brown Street, 248 6606. 8pm. £5 in advance, £6 door. No age restriction on this gig, so the kids with the skateboards won‘t have to desperately try to look afoot taller to get in. Thrash, of course.
Edinburgh
I The McCluskey Brothers Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. 9pm. Enjoyable pop with folk roots. Their small back catalogue has already thrown up plenty of songwriting gems, so lend them your ears.

I Jimmy Somerville, Danderas and llorse Tramway, Albert Drive. 8pm. £10.
Tickets from the Ticket Cenre ,
Candleriggs, 227 5511. Not surprisingly on
World AIDS Day, this is a benefit for Scottish AIDS monitor, which complements the Tramway’s Read My Lips exhibition and features the high-pitched vocal one and two sets of sisters doing it for themselves.
I The Countrymen, Planet Janet and The Junkroom King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. 8' Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £3.
I Glasgow Songwriters ieaturlng llell Thompson Blackfriars, Bell Street, 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. The featured singer from the B-side of the Glasgow Songwriters‘ new single, plus the ever-popular open platform.

Edinburgh
I llail Ian Rail Biscuit and The Probes Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. 9pm. Back to wrest their crown from the upstart likes of Sultans of Ping FC , whom they pre-empted in the ridiculous song titles and lyrical concerns department as well as in the creation of fidgety rhythmic indie pop. The preponderance of footballing references is another common factor — so will the Biscuits reap the yobbish audience they deserve?
I Odd Bodhran and Eat The Seats Delirium Club, Music Box, Victoria Street,225 2564. 10.30pm—3am. £3 (£2.50). The progenitors of ‘tribal trance‘ return to Edinburgh after a Highland tour. Singer and guitarist Jimmy Rogers (previewed in last issue) encompasses both Southern country blues and the driving Chicago style he helped cultivate in a famous band with Muddy Waters. They are at the City Hall in Glasgow on Thurs 19, and The Music Hall in Aberdeen on Sat 21. I Ran Benniclt and Steve Beresford Fruitmarket Gallery, Market Street. 7—9pm. £5 on door only. Drummer Han Bennick is one of the great names in European improvised music, and a wholly unpredictable performer with a liking for making use of anything remotely percussive — floors, walls, radiators, tables, barrels, cardboard boxes-to augment his drum-kit. Pianist Steve Beresford has played in all manner of improvised settings, and on a variety of instruments in addition to keyboard. This is the second of two concerts, and if you are quick you can still catch the first, on Thurs 19 at the Wee Red Bar inthe College of Art in Laurieston Place : (8—10pm, £5 (£3) on door).
