MUSIC ROCK & BLUES

I kd lang Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place, 5572590. 7.30pm. £12, £10. Back for her second Scottish visit this year, the fast-rising country singer who bypassed being tarred with the New Country brush by virtue of her originality and now has a movie role (Salmonberries) to her credit as well. Swiftly attaining iconic status.

TUESDAY 29 Glasgow
I The Scottish Sex Pistols Strathclyde University Union, John Street, 552 1895. 9pm. £4. Students and guests. Think we‘re on to a winner here. How will the Scottish Sex Pistols stand up against the most challenging of audience types — the beered-up and belligerent fresher mob? Remember to duck when the spittle starts flying.
I Buddha Grass Harbour and The Receiving End King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. Free with invite, otherwise £1 . This gig is a launch for the tape which M8 is giving away with its next issue, and features two diverse examples of what to expect.
I The Humpti Family and The Linden Tree Jordanhill College of Education, Southbrae Drive, 950 3256. Free for first years before 10pm, and £2 after. Does this tour never end? Another chance to see the less-than-obvious amalgam of The Humpfi Family‘s cajun concoction and The Linden Tree’s more conventional jangle.
I Hyah Feartles Dunny, Bogle Stone, Glassford Street, 553 1638. 8pm. £2. A wired combination of mild eccentricity and largely unbridled noise.
I Glasgow Songwriters Blackfriars, Bell Street, 552 5924. Live recording for a forthcoming album this week.

WEDNESDAY 30 Glasgow
I The Lemon Trees and The Henry Brothers King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £3.50. The Lemon Trees are the latest vehicle for ex-World Party Waterboy Guy Chambers. They hold no surprises, just pert, intelligent, undemanding pop that you‘ve heard before and may not yet be tired of.
I Franlt Sidebottom, The Rule and The Cloud Assassins Queen Margaret Union, University Gardens, 339 9784. 8pm. Freshers free, plus a limited number of £2 tickets for students and guests. Two local supports to old papier-mache-bonce
appearing as part of the Freshers‘ Week gomgs-on.
I The Basement Fixx 11, Miller Street, 221 1568. 9pm. Free. A big rocky Celtic sound from The Basement. tracing the same musical lineage as Runrig, but they have more than one slant to their sound.

I June Frost (TBC) Delirium Club, Music Box, Victoria Street, 225 2564. 10.30pm—3am. £2. Benefit for Amnesty International with two other bands. Delirium has a diverse playlist which covers everything from Pink Floyd to Chumbawumba.
I Ddd Bodhran, Papa’s Magic Beard and Dr Octopus Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. 9pm. £3 (£2.50 with ticket). Odd isthe word for this bunch’s mix of ‘Tibetan chants, pounding ancient drumming, distortion harmonica and atmospheric slap acoustic and bass guitars‘. Interesting mix of influences, but the claim that they lead audiences into a trance-like state is perhaps pushing it a bit. All in all, agood triple-bill, with two up-and-coming local acid funk bands in support. Additional sounds by DJ 5 from the Tribal club.
I The Unhinged Subway, Cowgate, 225 6766. 10pm. A new band emerging from the pool of 605 garage freaks that brought us The Thanes and The Offhooks.
I Angeline Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 10pm. Free.
I Lights Out By lllne Bertie’s, Merchant Street, 225 2002. 11pm. Free.
THURSDAY 1 Glasgow
I The Deadacres and Native Charm King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £3. Described as a‘young indie/rock outfit with a touch of decadence’. Other than that, we’re very much in the dark over this show.
I Flaere Halt Bar, Woodlands Road, 332 1210. 9pm. Free. See Mon 28.
I Sins OlThe Flesh Nice’n’Sleazy. Sauchiehall Street, 333 9637. 9pm.
I Sneakers Legends, Thorn Brae, Johnstone, 0505 35818. 9pm. Free.
I Cud and The Family Cat Motherwell Music Festival, Motherwell Concert Hall. 8pm. £6, £5. See preview for Cud. A good choice of support in that The Family Cat play totally idiosyncratic indie pop too, but there’s the same strain of accessibility that Cud have, and they’re fronted by a powerful, commanding voice too.
I Whirllng Pig Dervish, Revenge DlThe Carrots and Donkey Davy Jones Locker, Ashton Hotel, Albert Road, Greenock. For info phone: 0475 33113. 8pm. £2. Mad mix of punk and funk with jagged edges from WPD. Supported by two Dutch bands of the same ilk.

FRIDAY 2 Glasgow
I Pop Will Eat ltselt. Scorpio Rising and Sweet Jesus Barrowland, Gallowgate , 552 4601. 7.30pm. £7.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin,
- Union Street, 226 4679. Opinion is still
divided over Pop Will Eat Itself — are they pioneers of the indie/rap crossover and an inspiration to the likes of Carter and EMF (that’s the positive side of the argument incidentally) or are they a bunch of grinning idiots with daft accents and crap haircuts and thus an inspiration to the likes of Carter and EMF? Scorpio Rising have tenuous roots in all this cheery Midlands fraggle-pop, but are a shade darker and more psychedelic. As for Sweet Jesus — if you thought Julian Clary was camp, Ben Bentley makes him look like a part-timer. And all their songs are called ‘Honeypie Ballerina‘ or somesuch.
I Cud and The Family Cat Strathclyde University Union, John Street. 5521895. 8pm. £5. See preview for Cud. See Fri 1 for The Family Cat.
I The Joe Ely Band and The Coalporters King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £7. Promoting his first album in four years, which offers the familiar recipe, blending rock, blues and country influences. Support from The Coalporters who headlined Tut’s recently and feature ex-Long Ryder Sid Griffin in their line-up.
I Daisy Chainsaw and Butterfly Child Glasgow Polytechnic, Cowcaddens Road, 332 0681. 9pm. £6. Students and guests. Yes, they’re back! And they’ve ditched that appalling ‘performance art tnoupe‘, and brought a decent ambient indie outfit with them instead. Please don’t discard them now your copy of ‘Love Your Money’ is as warped as the band‘s outlook. There’s plenty more scuzzy, unapologetic screeching where that came from — a whole album’s worth of untutored mania called Eleventeen. Last time they played it was all cream cakes and confetti— what will Katie do next? Punters turning up after PWEI with their ticket stubs will get in at a reduced rate to this freshers‘ all-nighter.
I Afghan Whigs and Boyfriend The Cathouse, Brown Street, 2486606. 7.30pm. £5. Ten-a-penny though loud American bands may be at the moment, Afghan Whigs are worth more of your time than most. They’ve just turned in a thumping cover of The Supremes’ ‘My World Is Empty Without You‘ backed by the best song that Dinosaur Jr never. wrote, ‘Conjure Me’. Boyfriend comprise various Teenage F anclub roadcrew members.
I Nosferatu The Dunny, The Bogle Stone, Glassford Street, 553 1638. 8pm. £2. Excessive gothic nonsense, lapped up by the city’s pallid night owls.
I The Road Nice’n’Sieazy, Sauchiehall Street, 333 9637. 9pm. £1 .
I The Blues Poets MacSorleys, Jamaica Street, 221 8499. 9pm. Free.
I Zutl La Chute Cottiers, Hyndland Road, 357 5827. 9pm. Free. Dundee cajun band. I Angela Cameron Cottiers, Hyndland Road, 357 5827. 11pm. Free. Late night x$mm
I Dolce Vita Legends, Thorn Brae, Johnstone, 0505 35818. 9pm. Free.
Edinburgh

I Five Band Blues II Assembly Rooms, George Street, 220 4349. 8pm—1am. £5, weekend ticket £10. Tickets from Ripping, South Bridge, Backbeat, Candlemaker Row and Live Music, Leith Walk. Unicorn Productions present a follow-up to the successful one-off blues event in March. The real jamboree is a mammoth day of blues starting at 2pm tomorrow, but tonight’s session features veterans Blodwyn Pig - whose leader, Mick Abrahams, has been on the scene since the late 505 — and The Mike Park Blues Band. Weekend ticket-holders can attend a closing night knee’s-up in the Preservation Hall on Sun 4.
I Buddha Grass Harbour Lord Darnley, West Port, 229 4341. 10pm. Free. Energetic band from Glasgow makes a rare visit to this side of the country, peddling a sound that’s been touted as ‘electric blues meets acoustic folk ... with attitude'.
I The Dream Disciples and Sins DtThe Flesh Subway, Cowgate, 225 6766.
I The Block Brothers Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1.50 after 9pm. I Live music Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 10pm. Free.
I Live music Variety Bar, Chalmers‘ Close, off High Street, 557 5150. 10pm. Free.
SATURDAY 3 Glasgow
I Megadeth Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601. 7.30pm. £12 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. At the risk of offending well-informed metalheads, is it fair to call Megadeth thrash metallers par excellence? Whatever the label, they’ve been making a similar ruthless noise to Metallica for years now, but don‘t seem to have graduated to arenas, pyrotechnics and fifteen-minute drum solos yet.
I ELO Part ll Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Sauchiehall Street. 7.30pm. £12.50, £10.50, £9.50. As if Part Iwasn’t excruciating enough. Watch ELO suspend time and come over all 1974 again with mountains of keyboards and mock-heroic attitude. Actually this could be some bid to parallel Mike Oldfield’s comeback.
I A House Strathclyde University Union, John Street, 5521895. 9pm. £3.50. Students and guests. Clever, wordy Irish band who employ pleasant jangly, sometimes folky guitars for a touch of levity in much the same way as early James or The Blue Aeroplanes. If you haven’t caught them so far on their many trips to Scotland this year, make the most of this opportunity.
I Tarot Marrow and The Blisters King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £3. Local double-bill.
I The Persuaders Queen Margaret Union, University Gardens, 339 9784. 8pm. Free for freshers and a limited number of £2 tickets available for students and guests. The Aberdeen band are the musical contribution to an evening of cabaret as part of Freshers’ Week. After a long time together, and hundreds of songs, they’ve settled on the fairly attractive trad-rocky ‘The Town Will Never Know’ as the first release on their own Clown Records. Available, as they say, at better record shops.
I Wedgewood Line (TBC), Halt Bar, Woodlands Road, 332 1210. 9pm. Free. I Mama Mesto Nice’n’Sleazy, Sauchiehall Street, 333 9637. 9pm. £1.50. Smooth, commercial jazzjfunk.
I Free Airways Radio Cafe Loco, The Arches, Midland Street, 221 9736. 11pm. £5. Soul and funk.
I Felah MacSorleys, Jamaica Street, 221 8499. 9pm. Free.
