I Goodbye Mr Mackenzie and The Joyriders Strathclyde University Union, John Street, 552 1895. 9pm. £6.50. Students and guests. Two sides of the coin from Edinburgh to kick off a full term’s activity at Strathclyde Uni. Goodbye Mr Mackenzie have some three-quarters- decent tunes and a bit of suss, and if you‘re still craving garage pop American-ster , then The Joyriders' highly melodic take on the oh-so-familiar sound should please.
I The Godfathers and The Thin Men Cathouse, Brown Street, 248 6606. 8pm. £4. The Godfathers used to make like the Kray Quins and make terrific muscular alternative rock which seemed to owe little to anyone or anything beyond a certain lip-curling attitude. Then they siphoned off the 605 influences but kept the macho attitude, and nowadays no one seems particularly sure what they’re doing, but it’s probably butch and angry. I The llaked Flames, Johnny Turk and The Nocturnals King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £3. A triple bill of indie bands: The Naked Flames wield plangent guitars and last time around The Nocturnals were blending psychedelic influences with an indie dance sound.
I Balance Glasgow School Of Art, Renfrew Street, 332 0691. 9.30pm. £3 (£2.50). Students and guests. The Art School’s freshers’ ball, with DJ ing from the Unity Reggae crowd.
I The Thanes Cellar 605 Bar, Miller Street. 8pm. Free. There was a time when a Thanes gig in Glasgow was as common an occurrence as you could wish for, but an appearance by the 605 beatmasters is now something to be cherished. They appear tonight at a regular evening for Obsessives of the golden musical decade.
I Spiral Records Night Dunny, Bogle Stone, 5521638. 8pm. £2(£1). Another showcase evening for bands on the mooted Spiral Records compilation. Tonight’s line-up is Wish, Indigo Father, Roundabout, The Hemingways and Wedgewood Line.
I Ska B Dugs Nice‘n'Sleazy, Sauchiehall Street, 333 9637. 9pm. £2.50. Glasgow‘s own ska exponents.
I The Henry Brothers Cottiers, Hyndland Road, 357 5827. 9pm. Free. Infectious folk-influenced racket.

I The Frank And Walters and Radlohead Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. 7.30pm. Note early start. Now this lot are mad — ever read any of their interviews? Is this Planet Earth? Fortunately , they keep some of their insanity aside to infuse into their slightly angular pop songs, before pouring all the rest into their performance. The stage costumes are
cute, sure, but their entertainment value is more than skin deep. Oxfordian support , Radiohead, have just had their second EP. Creep, released by Parlophone.
I Reverend Brovrn And The Early Birds Variety Bar, Chalmers’ Close. off High Street, 557 5150. 9pm. Free. Gutsy blues and power-shanties from the string-shedding Rev and crew, who have upped sticks from their native Midlands for a short Scottish tour. Copies of their LP, Well, Bless My Soul!, will most likely be on sale afterwards.

John Street, 552 1895. 9pm. £3.50. Students and guests. Two great Glasgow bands — Superstar have the lush pop tunes and sweet harmonies; AC Acoustics have the adrenalin rush and guitars that torch. Both are hopefully on the ascent.
