This week’s review comes irom Alan Jones oi Music Week, the Bacardi Beat Chart compiler.

Swiss disc jockey DJaimin’ moves to the top oi the pile this week, as Luther Vandross and Janet Jackson’s ‘The Best Things In Lile Are Free’, irom the movie ‘Mo’hloney’, loses its grip. There’s a slight lull in chart action this week, with the highest new entry coming irom Michael Jackson, with ‘Jam’, the litth single irom his ‘Dangerous’ album. ‘Jam’, a typically rattling swing track, proved to be something of a ilop in America, where it peaked at number 26, to give Jacko his lowest chart placing since 1979. But it looks certain to make a much better showing here, and in advance oi its commercial release, his record company provides DJs with an expensive twinpack oi no iewer than thirteen mixes oi the song, which last almost an hour.

called because it samples Bill Preston singing the same phrase from his 1990 house cover version oi David Bowie’s classic ‘Heroes’.

Remakes are big news at the moment, and several are bubbling just outside the chart, among them Control’s revision oi Candi Station’s ‘Young Hearts Run Free’, its title now abbreviated to ‘Young Hearts’. Victoria Miles’s update oi Princess’s ‘Say I’m Your Number One’ and ‘Shame’, a hardcore/techno overhaul oi Evelyn King’s 70s hit created by Staitord group Altern 8, with Evelyn herseli drafted in to recreate — in an entirely dilierent setting — hervocal chorus.

Di the more mellow, soultul tracks, the hands-down winner at present is Martlne Girault’s classy ‘Revival’, an ideal late-nighterthat has been released twice already, but will probably have to come around a third time beiore realising its true Gallup chart potential.

The Bacardi Beat Dance Chart will be taking the pulse oi Scotland’s dancetloor again in the next issue.

I Timewarp at The Mission. llpm—4am. £2/free before lam. A new night featuring a truly eclectic music policy, ie absolutely anything at all, so long as it comes from the 60s, 70s or 805. Doesn‘t cut the options down much. does it?

I Wave at the Venue. 11pm—5am. Members and guests only. Always a good night guaranteed. Often just as busy as Friday's Pure but with a less upfront (ie not so hardcore) music policy. Look out for some big-name guests in the near future.

I Wheels at The Mission. llpm—3am. £1.50 before midnight/£2.50 after. The hairy and leather-clad come out in force for this rock night, I’m told.
