-I A House King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. lrish band whose now re-released ‘Endless Art‘ single saw them undergo a bit of a renaissance last year. Their support slots with The House Of Love revealed them to be a bit like James with a sense of humour intact.

I Son Of Noise Nice‘n‘Sleazy. Sauchiehall Street. 333 9637. 10pm. £1 .

I The Shouts Cottier‘s. Hyndland Road. 357 5827. 8.30pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I The Television Personalities and The Thanes Moray House Student Union. Holyrood Road. 10pm—4am. £3.50. Psychedelic indie-poppers with an influence and brilliance far outstripping their sales figures. and it‘s comforting to know that their back catalogue. which includes such gems as ‘The Painted Word’ and ‘Mummy You‘re Not Watching Me‘. is being reissued. A new single, ‘We Will Be Your Gurus‘. is on Seminal Twang.

I Scatter! Subway. Cowgate. 225 6766. 10pm. Aggressive guitar pop. A four-track EP is planned for late September.

SATURDAY 8 Glasgow

I The Lunachlclts King Tut‘s Wah Wah

Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £5. Poor-taste junkies with loud grungey guitars and no apologies for their gaudy ‘rock babe‘ garb and ineptitude in the eyeliner application department. The Fuzzbox of your nightmares or a cartoon L7. Don‘t try to read them your poetry. I Ruthless Blues and The Frank White Blues Band Renfrew Ferry. Clyde Place. 429 3766. 9pm. £5 (£4). Tickets from Ferry booking office. 429 2683. or the Ticket Centre. Candleriggs. 227 5511.

I Hugh need And The Velvet Underpants Nice‘n‘Sleazy. Sauchiehall Street. 333 9637. 10pm. Free. More personnel shifts in the Underpants camp. as head honcho Hugh was heard to mutter recently ‘the line-up changes. but the songs stay the same'.

I The Cloud Assassins Halt Bar. Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9pm. Free. I Dog Richard‘s Basement. West Regent Street. 221 0116. 9pm. Free. See Thurs 6. I Catch Blackfriars. Bell Street. 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free.

I The Boogie Brothers Dugout. Cathcart Street. Greenock. 0475 27918. 9.30pm. £2.50.

Edinburgh

I Texas and The Lost Soul Band Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £8.50. £6.50. Not at all displeased by the success of their recent Al Green cover. Texas have been supporting Bryan Adams abroad and playing European arenas in their own right but turned down a gig at the French Grand Prix for reasons we may one day discover. This gig may feature a number of new songs as it comes in a break in the recording schedules for their next album.

I A House and Family Go Town Subway. Cowgate. 225 6766. See Fri 7 for A House. Arrive in time for Family Go Town. who have an EP coming out soon with the hot breath of Celtic soul running through it, and will probably raise a few temperatures tonight.

I The Thane: and The Kaiser: Lord Darnley. West Port. 229 4341 . 9pm. Edinburgh‘s perennial 60s garage fetishists dip into their extensive catalogue of songs. The Kaisers are the latest band of masterly (but genuinely respectful) parodist George Miller. who includes The Styng-Rites on his CV. and probably plunder a similar part of the musical spectrum as the headliners.

I Biueilnger Platform One. Rutland Street. 225 2433. 9pm. Free. Edinburgh‘s hardest-working 505- and 603-style rock'n‘roll band.

I June Frost Negociants. Lothian Street. 2256313. 10.15pm. Free.

I .ieggro Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1.50 after 9pm.

I Mustang Sally Lord Darnley. West Port. 229 4341. 4pm. Free.

I Rab Howitt Bev’s Bar And Basement. Morrison Street, 228 6784. 3pm. Free.

I Litre music Trader Vic’s. Victoria Street. 225 3326. 5pm. Free.

Kirkcaldy

I Supernova and The '69": Number 68. Kirkcaldy High Street. 8pm. £1.50. The first gig for Supernova, but judging from their rather impressive demo it won’t be the last. The Kirkcaldy scene continues to flourish.

SUNDAY 9 Glasgow

I Eugene Chadboume and Orchestre Murphy Renfrew Ferry. Clyde Place. 429 3766. 8pm. £4 (£3). Tickets from Ferry booking office. 429 2683. or the Ticket Centre. Candleriggs. 227 5511. It‘s always a treat when the inventor of LSD C&W comes to town. Chadbourne. oddball though he may be. is nonetheless one of the most respected improvisers in the business (he‘s worked with the likes of John Zorn. Camper Van Beethoven. Shockabilly and the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra) and his vast repertoire of songs. ranging from ‘Eight Miles High‘ and ‘Are You Experienced‘ to obscure country classics are always spiced up by his own. er. idiosyncratic guitar solos. London-based avant-gardists

.Orchestre Murphy aren‘t quite so cuddly.

but you‘ll struggle to find a bigger name on the British avant-garde rock scene.

I The Steve Campbell Band Apollo. Renfrew Court. 332 6231. 9pm. Free. AOR.

I Family Gotown and Whirling Plg Dervish Rico‘s. Ann Street. Greenock. 0475 26522. 9.30pm. £3. A young five-piece from English parts who play upbeat indie pop and find it encumbent upon themselves to grin inanely every time someone thrusts a camera in their vicinity. Whirling Pig Dervish are just completely raw and mental enough to cover ‘John Wayne Is Big Leggy‘ and ‘lfThe Kids Are United‘ in one set.

Edinburgh

I The Lunachicits Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. See Sat 8.

I Crush Zone Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 10.15pm. Free. Some former members of Call Me Clive in a new band which seemingly retains some of the danciness. but with a rougher edge.

I Hard Station Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free.

I Kaw-nga Subway. Cowgate. 225 6766. 10pm. £1.50.

I Shibboleth Bertie's. Merchant Street. 225 2002. 11pm. Free. See Sun 2.

I Guaranteed Pure Madogs. George Street. 225 3408. 10pm. Free. See Fri 31.

I Papa's Magic Beard. Uncle Jam and Doctor Octopus Music Box. Victoria Street. 225 2564. 8pm. A multitude of Edinburgh
