; Alter last week's ‘old's greatest steeplechase’, Scotland weighs in with l its own blg gambling race on Saturday,
to call than ever this year, as it comes only one week alter the tour and a hall miles at Aintree. Although chasers are amongst the toughest sporting animals outside ol pit-bulls, it may be asking too much to expect them to race well so
What we could be left with is a iield composed either at non-starters at Aintree or horses that came to griei early on. One horse which will not be putting in an appearance is last year’s winner Klllone Abbey, who won at the customary Scottish National long odds oi 40-1. lie was lollowed home by the Martin Pipe-trained Omerta, last year's iavourite and many people’s prelerred horse again this year. Omerta tell on the iirst circuit at Aintree so will at least be lresh, ii a little shaken.
Another contender must be the Duke oi Atholl’s Boraceva who was run out
AvntooAv‘}p I I , w (a?
. I over the llnal iurlong in 1991. But he was only eight years old last year, very young tor a chaser, and should have gained some extra stamina over the winter. There’s also the not-so-small
matter that Boraceva is trained by Toby Balding, oiten seen as the second best trainer in the country behind Martin Pipe, but nevertheless already having shown Pipe’s and Jenny Pitman’s horses the way home in the Gold Cup with Cool Ground.
However, The Llst's expert pundits (who, incidentally, won a packet on Party Politics last week) go tor Over The Road for this year’s race. John Upson's horse llnlshed eighth at Aintree, having laded in the llnal hall mile, but the more traditional Ayr iences should suit him down to the ground. So, it Upson tests that his horse has the stamina a mere week ailerthe National, and he races him, Over The Road should certainly be in the irame. (Philip Parr)
