power oi the cinematic image, this level of stereotyping Is more than dangerous, undoing years of

g campaigning work by gay rights pressure groups.

Outside of the mainstream, however, groups and individual filmmakers are building up an acclaimed body of work L that challenges preconceptions with insight and humour. The 6th London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, which ran at the National Film Theatre at the end of March, proved this with an impressive array oi shorts, ieatures, retrospectives and talks by contemporary gay filmmakers. Selected programmes from the Festival make their way north oi the border this month, with events at the Glasgow Film Theatre and Edinburgh Filmhouse.

Highlights include P.J. Castalianta's Together Alone, which was voted Audience Favourite at last year’s prestigious San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, and Times Square, a cult lesbian film made in 1980 by Allan Moyle, who went on to direct last year’s low-key hit, Pump Up The Volume. On one level. the film is the critical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the cover of Time magazine; just as importantly. it‘s an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances.
