I Outcast: (18) Leigh B. Grade uses abuses of power in Nazi Germany to provide the background for a series of fictional scenes in a Berlin-style lesbian nightclub. With three other films on lesbian identity. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Pam TM ( 18) (Stephen Gyllenhaal. _US. 1991) Dennis Hopper. Barbara Hershey. Ed Harris. Tina Lifford. 99 mins. Interesting. but by no means stunning. Glasgow: Grosvenor.
ITIIO Pied Plper(12) (Jiri Barta. Czech. 1985)57 mins. Stunningly impressive piece of Czech animation places the famous tale of greed and cruel justice in an expressionistic world of tortured buildings and souls. On the simplest level. it‘s an amour fou road movie. but the central storyline sweeps with it a huge range of styles and moods before its tragic showdown. and sustains an ironic existentialism to its final frame. A work of flawed brilliance. and a turning point in Godard's career. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I The film SMI(15) (Philip Kaufman. US. 1983) Sam Shepard. Scott Glenn. Ed Harris. Dennis Quaid. 193 mins. Tom Wolfe‘s book about the early days of space flight treats the first test pilots~cum~astr0nauts as modern day cowboys crossing a new frontier. The myriad plot-lines are well dove-tailed and the flying scenes are memorably impressive. but for all the film‘s expansiveness its abrupt swings of mood somehow militate against the kind ofinvolvement that would have made it a truly great movie (instead of just a rather good one). Glasgow: GFT.
