Two French teenagers embark on a road journey that takes them back to the Occupation as well as acrossthe country. The Coen Brothers‘ latest opus is a predictably quirky-but-stylish reworking ofgenre material — in this case the gangsterflick. Set in an unnamed East-coast city in the 19305. it centres on the falling-out between mob-leader Finney and his right-hand man Byrne when both take a shine to the same broad (Harden). Possibly the best. most under-rated film of 1991. Glasgow: GFT.

This time he‘s sorting out the lives ofhis tomboy neighbour and her widowed mortician dad. A kiddies‘ romance with a (literal) stingin the tail. Also with the best character name in recent months (can you imagine admitting to knowing someone called Vada Sultenfuss?) General release.

Twelve-year-oid lngemar copes with his mother's terminal illness and his family‘s general indifference to him by indulging in a high fantasy life. including the pretence that he is a dog. Terrible title: wonderful. unmissable film. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Nikita ( 18) (Luc Besson. France. 1990) Anne Parillaud. Tcheky Karyo. Jean-Hughes Anglade. Jeanne Moreau. 114 mins. The latest exercise in stylish tosh from Gallic maestro Besson. Pariilaud stars as a junkie waif resurrected from her dreary existence by the enigmatic Karyo. an agent for the government's most secretive undercover organistaion. and pretty soon she‘s a topnotch assassin. I Persona (18) (Ingmar Bergman. Sweden. 1966) Liv Ullmann. Bibi Andersson. Margaretha Krook. 81 mins. Bergman at his most impressive and intense. Andersson is an actress in the middle ofa breakdown and refusing to speak. Ullmann the nurse looking after her. As the two developa symbiotic relationship. the difficulty of and need for communication between human beings is examined. A film that remains an almost physical and often psychologically disturbing experience. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Point Bulk ( 15) (Kathryn Bigelow. US. 1991) Keanu Reeves. Patrick Swayze. Gary Busey. Lori Petty. 120 mins. Director Bigelow (Blue Steel. Near Dark) takes on Hollywood‘s action/adventure big boys at their own game and comes out on top. Reeves is the eager young FBI recruit on the trail ofa group oflatex-masked bank robbers who are known to be surfers. Board under arm. he heads for the waves. Bigelow tackles cliches of buddy partnerships. macho bullshit and thriller shoot-outs with fresh energy. creating a terrific movie that has one foot in reality. the other in an absurdist world. Haynes‘ low-budget triptych pulls together three separate stories with ‘deviance‘ as the linking theme. The Jean Genet-influenced third section. ‘Homo‘. has attracted most fiak over is lurid depiction of prison love. Central: MacRobert Arts Centre.
I Prince oii‘ldes (15) (Barbra Streisand. US. 1991) Nick Nolte. Barbra Streisand. Kate Neiligan. Jeroen Krabbe. 131 mins. Glossy. romantic tale of a Southern boy in New York. falling in love with his sister‘s psychiatrist while revealing his traumatic childhood in order to help bring his twin back to health. While Streisand‘s direction is sometimes shaky and her own performance is a little too self-conscious. there is no doubt that she encourages career-best performances from her co-stars. Nolte. in particular. is worth the price of admission on his own. General release.

No sooner have we got over suffering the stomach-churning sweetness of My Girl and Curly Sue than it‘s time for the return of the pre-pubescent. bow tie-clad Junior (Oliver) from 1990‘s Problem Child. This time he and his surrogate father are trying to come to terms with the excess of single women in their new home town. As ifwe cared. Glasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Central: Allanpark. Following the death in a New York shoot-out of a crook. the much-admired cop responsible for his killing (Nolte) is hauled up before a grand jury. But when the DA (Hutton) digs deeper. he discovers this isn‘t an open-and~shut case of justifiable homicide. Typically assured. hard-bitten and suspenseful thriller. written and directed by Lumet with the authority of experience. Strathclyde: UCI East Kilbridc.

Sleepy Georgia of 1935 is the setting forthis coming-of-age period piece in which a barefoot farm girl is taken in by a more prosperous family. Rose (Dern) is a naive temptress and amongthose who fall for her simple charms are thirte'en- year-old Buddy (Lukas Haas of Witness fame). Glaswegian-in-London Stevie (Carlyle) grinds out a meagre living on a building site andenters into a relationship with Susan (McCourt). who has musical aspirations. The jolly badinage ofStcvie‘s co-workers (among them ex-Brookie Tomlinson) provides an enjoyably humorous backdrop. I Robin Hood: Prince 0i Thieves ( 12) (Kevin Reynolds. US. 1991) Kevin Costner. Morgan Freeman. Christian Slater. Alan Rickman. 147 mins. Another outing for the Nottingham legend. this time with Hollywood's golden boy in the title role. Costncr‘s Robin slips into Indiana Jones mode as he sets about undoing the wrongs of Rickman's scene-stealing Sheriff in a way that is wonderfully reminiscent of the best Saturday matinee swashbucklers. Winning serio-comic love story in which hard-nosed business exec falls for his black cleaning lady. As their affair breaks down both class and racial barriers. her shrewd insight into the absurdity of corporate power-broking helps him to discover a new set of more worthwhile values. Serreau comes up with an insightful and funny examination of the way we live now. though it does bear a highly coincidental resemblance to the outline of Pretty Woman! Glasgow: GF'T. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. IA Smell Piece oi Germany ( 15) (Joachim Tschirner/Lew Hohmann/Klaus Salge. Germany. 1991 ) The title refers to the death zone beside the Berlin Wall which kept the two Germanies apart for so many years. The directors present three case histories of people involved in escape attempts. with the cumulative effect of adding a human perspective to a physical and political barrier. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Snovt White and the Seven Dwarfs (U) (Walt Disney. US. 1937) With the voices ofAdriana Caselotti. Harry Stockwell. Lucille La Verne. 83 mins. One of the most enchanting and influential of animated features. The central character is a mite wet but the individualistic dwarfs. memorable songs. superbly crafted backdrops and characters make this an essential cinematic experience. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Throw in a renegade Klingon or two and the old mutual mistrust and tacky dialogue hits ham factor eight . . . and rising.
