Dennis Potter's first original cinema screenplay is a careful and evocative study of the way in which the memoriesof old age can fit together the half-understood experieiicesof youth. Steve Martin is nauseating as the over-protective father. unwilling to accept that his baby girl is all grown up. Slushy and barely funny. it's another step by Martin along the caring comic route of Parenthood rather than the inspired madness of his early days. General release. Arresting adventure flick in which the bankable Ms Roberts plus Messrs Sutherland Jnr and Bacon play a band of medical students exploring the fine line between life and death. By tampering with life support machines. they‘re able to reach the moment when all the vital signs have stopped and the monitors are showing flat lines (hence the title). before being brought back by their associates. Set in near-future America. tht plot revolves around the tribulations of fertile white women. who are forced to act as child-bearers for the ruling elite. Predictable resistance-movement adventures follow the heroine‘s capture. and the novel‘s subtlety drowns despite everyone‘s efforts. Glasgow: GFT. I Hell in the Pacific ( 12) (John Boorman. US. 1968) Lee Marvin. Toshiro Mifune. 103 mins. The intriguing premise ofa US Marine pilot and Japanese naval officer stranded together on a desert island degenerates into a series of macho stand-offs and unsatisfying allegory. At last deemed fit for certification . Oshima‘s shockingly erotic film can now be publicly screened. 1n the militaristJapan of 1936. a couple enclose themselves in theirown sensual world. their passion escalating until only death can provide the next orgasm. Masterly though necessarily extremely explicit look at the power of sexual arousal. which has attracted controversy throughout the world. Glasgow: Grosvenor. I Jacob's Ladder ( 18) (Adrian Lyne. Vietnam vet Jacob Singer is seeing some very strange things. like nurses with demons' horns and people with faces straight out ofa Francis Bacon painting. As his grip on the reality of his present life begins to slip. he has recurring flashbacks to the night his platoon was wiped out during the war. The director of Fate/Attraction and the writer of Ghost combine to pull off one of the most terrifying. yet ultimately moving. paranoia thrillers of recent years. Edinburgh: Cameo. I JFK(15) (Oliver Stone. US. 1991) Kevin Costner. Joe Pesci. Gary Oldman. Tommy Lee Jones. 191) mins. Based on the controversial theories of New ()rleans district attorneyJim Garrison. Stone‘s epic account of what did or did not happen when President Kennedy made an untimely exit from this world makes for enthralling cinema. A fine performance by Costner is supported by one of the finest casts ever assembled before the camera. Regardless of verity of his argument. this is Stone's most powerful effort to date. I Jungle Fever ( l8) (Spike Lee. US. 1991) Wesley Snipes. Annabella Sciorra. John Turturro. Spike Lee. Anthony Quinn. 132 mins. Black yuppie Flipper Purify (Snipes) launches into an ill-fated affair with his Italian-American secretary (Sciorra) and adds fuel to the fire ofinter-racial tensions. Spike Lee‘s latest controversial work also includes a major subplot on drug addiction. which leaves the audience wondering if he has tackled too many ‘big‘ issues at once. Still. it‘sa stylish piece with some good performances. even if the director's message is not exactly positive. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Animated feature from Disney graduate Bluth follows the fortunes of orphaned Brontosaurus Littlefoot. who loses his mum to the claws of a nasty Tyrannosaurus Rex before teaming up with a gang of similarly parentless wee dinos to undertake the hazardous journey across country to the safety of the Great Valley. Classically drawn and chockful of edifying moral lessons. this is solid entertainment perfectly tailored to the demands of its target audience of very young children. Glasgow: GF'I‘.

Ill-matched buddy duo of scuzzball private eye (Willis) and disgraced sports idol (Wayans) biff. bang and crash their way through bone-crushing violence and producer Joel Silver's trademark explosions. State-of-the-art fluff. which works like a good dirty joke — shameful but kind of fun. General release.
I The Last Temptatlon Dl Chrlxt ( 18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1988) Willem Dafoe. Harvey Keitel. Barbara Hershey. Harry Dean Stanton. 163 mins. Controversial though hardly blasphemous adaptation of the Nikos Kazantzakis novel has Christ tempted on the cross by the possibility of living out his life as an ordinary man. which allows him to realise the full significance of his divinity. Straightforward though rather overlong treatment ofthe ministry with Dafoe a rather conventional-ltmking Christ. The rather reverent tone lacks the edge of the director‘s earlier work on the mean streets of New York. Strathclyde: Motherwell Theatre.
I Letlllm Have it ( 15) (Peter Medak. UK. 1991) Chris Eccleston. Paul Reynolds. Tom Courtenay. Eileen Atkins. 98 mins. Timely release for big-screen version ofthe Bentley case. In 1952. Bentley. who had a mental age ofeleven. was executed for his part in the murder of a policeman. who was actually shot by Chris Craig. a sixteen-year-old and therefore too young to hang. Medak again proves that. as in The Krays. he has an eye for period detail. but the film‘s lasting effect is as a sober indictment of the miscarriage of justice. Glasgow: Grosvenor.

I Locked Up Time ( 15) (Sibylle Schonemann. Germany. 199(l)9(lmins. Award-winning documentary which follows the investigations of filmmaker Schonemann into her arrest by the Stasi in 1984 and subsequent deportation to the West. While painting a revealing picture of both Germanies before and after the Wall came down. it succeeds more as a personal quest for truth. Schonemann will be present at this screening. Glasgow: GET.
