I Transmission You may remember way back in October we mentioned the exciting news about a bid to launch a 24-hour FM dance station in Edinburgh. Although, as is the way of such things, progress has been slow, 1992 should see a number of events operating under the Mayday Communications banner. The first of which is Transmission on 31 Jan at The Network (see listings for details). This 12-hour event, as well as raising money for the venture. will be the first opportunity to actually hear what the station sounds like. Operating on 100.6FM, programming begins at 6pm on Friday and will continue until 6am on Saturday with the following scheduled slots. 6—7pm US House with Gareth and featuring Ege Bam Yasi.
7—8pm UK House with Myster E.
8—9pm Techno with Wavetrain.
9L10pm Hip Hop with A-One.
10pm—4am Transmission live from The Network. 4—4.40am Hip Hop with A-One.
4.40—5.20am Reggae/Dub with Steve.
5.20—6am Soul with Yogi.
As well as featuringThe Big Payback Sound System, the live events at The Network will also feature contributions from London‘s Fantasy FM DJs who have been supplying valuable advice and encouragement.
No doubt, after hearing the finished product, you will be eager to help Mayday in any way you can. The easiest way is to sign the petition (ifyou haven‘t already done so) which can be found in record shops and hairdressers around town. I The End Another one bites the dust. Could it be that come the end of March Edinburgh will lose another venue? it seems the lease expires on a certain East End clubthat over the last few years has been an important live and club venue. Still, with The Vaults threatening to be fully open around the same time and the planning application for a new club in the Broughton Street area, maybe it‘s not all doom and gloom.
TURNTABLE
Chocolate City (alternate Thursdays at Edinburgh’s Venue) has, overthe last lew months, built up quite a iollowing ol clubbers eager to be seduced by their policy of ‘happy but heavy grooves’. l-iere Jamie (who also DJs at The Big Payback at The Venue) and Whitney pick ten tracks that help to maintain the friendly and irenzied atmosphere that is Chocolate City.
1. The Head Hunters: God Made Me Funky. Herbie Hancock’s supreme team of lunksters display the way to make you move to a groove.
2. Maceo: Soul Power 74. Classic re-working at James Brown’s black power anthem. Maceo’s solo is notoriously bad.
3. Mantronix: King at The Beats. The opening sirens prepare you ior what has to be one at the best dance cuts at the 80s. Hard and lull of breaks.
4. Fred Wesley: Blow Your Head. Here the JBs literally blow your mind. Wired and weird and wild.
5. Sindecut: Build Up A Spliii and Easy. This white label of ‘Crack Business’ combines a soothing bassline. pulsating rhythm and acidilied guitar. The result is awesome.
6. Mongo Santamaria: Cloud Nine. The heavy congas and screaming sax lift
you to the higher planes.
7. Cymande: Brothers On The Slide. Rootsy groove from this criminally underplayed iunk band.
8. Grandmaster Flash: Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel. The title says it all. Flash’s display remains one at the best examples of mixing on record.
9. Lady 6: Hull Respect. Rhythmical ragga with a pounding bassline. Rougher than rough.
1o. Grover Washington: Black Frost. Let your mind unwind to the solid sound of this pure lunk.
