Mississippi Masala (15) (Mira flair, US, 1991) Denzel Washington, Sarita Choudhury. Roshan Seth, Sharmllla Tagore. 113 mins. Following her hightly assured and compassionate debut with Salaam Bombayl, Mira llair's second film is more ambitious in scope. but doesn’t quite manage to mould its fascinating subject matter into a satisfying dramatic whole. Opening in 1972 Kampala with Amin's forcible expulsion of Uganda’s entire Asian population. Mississippi Masala traces the sense of loss and the lasting effects of inter-racial hostility when the central family attempts to begin a new life in the American South.

motels, love once again bridges the divide of colour but at the expense of
much disapproval from both sets of
relatives and the wider community at large.
Certainly the absence of the usual white middle-class perspective is gratifyineg refreshing and the dissection of the various repressive social and sexual hang-ups that encumber both Asian and black ethnic groups is convincingly clear-headed. It’s just that despite the obvious attractiveness of both actors, the love affair fails to spark and passions don't quite ignite, possibly because Washington’s character- in a very 60: Sidney Poltler-ish way- is just too nice to be terribly sexy. As a result. it’s an engrossing tale with much to recommend it, but a little more grit and gumption might have upped the must-see factor a couple of notches. (Trevor Johnston)
