I Freddie Hubbard Quintet Queen‘s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. CANCELLED. The trumpeter would have been making his Scottish debut. but has cancelled his European tour at short notice. Assembly have decided not to attempt to organise a replacement. and the season will now start with Taj Mahal next week (see Friday 1).

I Doky Brothers Band featuring Tommy Smith Queen‘s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. 8.30pm. £9.50—£6 (£4.50). Brought up in Copenhagen‘s fertile jazz scene. brothers Niels Lan Doky (piano) and Christian Minh Doky (bass) have joined forces in this band. Saxophonist Tommy Smith. who employs Niels to excellent effect in his own band. fills the saxophone chair. while Finnish drummer Jukkis Uotila has proved his mettle in the Randy Brecker Quintet. The band also play at the Younger Hall in St Andrews on Saturday 26. and the Arts Centre in Aberdeen on Monday 28. See preview. and also Tuesday 29.

This club is intended to be a musician‘s haunt for the traditional night-off (although most musicians I know will permit themselves a wry smile at the idea of there only being one gig-less night in the week). but is open to the public. The featured band will be Berkeley Street Blues. an offshoot of the Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra who favour a more traditional style. From 10.45pm. the house trio will take over. with guests sitting in.

I Lanny Morgan Society of Musicians. 73 Berkeley Street. 221 61 12. 8pm. £6 (members £4). Alto saxophonist Lanny Morgan served an apprenticeship with various big bands before making his name in a five-year stint as principal soloist with the Maynard Ferguson Big Band (1960-1965). After leaving Ferguson. he played in a variety ofother bands. established a name as a studio musician. and recorded as leader of his own small groups. as well as teaching at Stanford University. He is an ex-member ofthe Supersax group. and appears tonight in the congenial company of the Sandy Taylor Trio.
