Chaotic fusion ofblues and funk with a touch of psychedelia and just about every other sub- genre you care to mention popping up at some point. all topped off with a larger-than-life stage presence. The mind boggles.

The door price covers entry to all the union’s discos and bars. as opposed to being your ticket to see just the band. We‘d better whisper this. but ifThrum didn‘t feature the upfront gutsy vocals of Moni. they would bear a remarkable resemblance to Teenage Fanclub. One day this comparison will be a death knell to Glasgow bands. but fortunately at the moment it appears to be a considerable advantage.

I World 01 Twist Queen Margaret Union. University Gardens. 339 9784. 7.30pm. £5. Students and guests. Despite the departure of the charming ifredundant MC Shells. World ()f'I‘wist still offer more of an intrinsic visual spectacle than most bands. and that‘s before you witness their tacky celebration of a stage set. Strip away the effects and you have a delightful pop band. but it‘s their wholesale embracingof kitsch stagecraft and their galactic gurgles that elevate them to the furthest realms of the stratosphere. it's only a matter oftime before they arrive onstage in a bubble car. I Spirea X and Static Strathclyde University Union. John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Students and guests. Despite reports to the contrary in the press. Spirea X never confirmed with their record company 4AD that they would undertake the two Scottish supports for Chapterhouse. making this their only Scottish appearance. This gig ties in with the release of their debut album Fireblude Skies. Support act Static will be no mystery to discerning indie punters with a stream of convincing cacophonic appearances already under their belt.

A deal with Paperhouse and the prestigious support slot on the Nirvana tour will probably work wonders for Captain America's already high profile. as well as (hopefully) allow them todeveiop an identity above and beyond the Teenage Fanclub comparisons that have dogged them since day one. We‘ve said it before— Captain America peddle a great line in killer riffs and are generally harder than their Creation-residing pals.

Another somcthing-for-everyone triple bill headed by Reading's finest anorexia cases currently sparring with unkind national press. distracted from their quest to ‘create a complex and beautiful place to escape to‘. The Belltower‘s current EP quashes fears that they are a turgid effects-blighted muso guitar outfit and proves instead that they're a sparkling pop band. just not very inspiring live. And can we once again take this opportunity to rave interminably about the wonders of Fenn'? They‘re displaying a remarkable readiness to take on the big league. so hand them a record deal someone and let's really shake up the indie chart.
