I Windfall '91 — a group of Scottish artists with an eye for grand gestures — is about to embark on a project which has now been a year in the planning. For one month 26 artists. from six European countries. will create new works in the Seaman's Mission. at large building in Glasgow‘s Broomielaw. with some 30 exhibition spaces. Subsequently the building will be demolished and the area redeveloped. More details soon.
I Hot on the heelsot Keeping Glasgow in Stitches. comes Textures of the City. an ambitious year-long embroidery project which will illustrate different aspects of Glasgow's past and present. More importantly. the organisers. NeedleWorks. hope that their project will boost the status of embroidery; just as women have been discriminated against. they say. so needlework. which is invariably a female pursuit. has been belittled.

I Marks olDislinclion Karen Knorr (Thames and Hudson. £20). It is difficult to put a fingeron what it is. exactly. that is so unappealing about Knorr's photography . also currently on show at lidinburgh‘s Portfolio Gallery . The posed images ol the wealthy ‘upperclasses‘ iuxtaposcd \\ tlh texts of the sort ol silly thingsthcy say — about monarchy. gentlemen‘s clubs. and the British limpirc. lot' example ' should provoke at least a \\ ry laugh. may be even challenge assumptions. How cv er. Knorr's captions are not quotes. but suggestions about \s hat her models. pictured sitting on solasor proudly standing to attention in glamorous London homes. might say. assumingthey are as bigotted as she makes them out to be. It she had looked at them askance. caught them revealingly oil-guard. she might be more convincing. But this unsubtle approach is dehumanising. contemptuous even. and a quy . too-academic introduction sheds little [ ligltton her purpose.
