Bette Midler. 88 mins. It’s a bad sign when you start checking your watch before the opening credits are over, but only diehard Woody Allen fans or desperate insomniacs are going to find Mazursky’s latest anything but a ! time-waster.
Allen is an LA sports lawyer hustling endorsement deals for nonentities.
He’s also celebrating his sixteenth wedding anniversary to pop psychologist and best-selling marital guide writer Midler. Kids packed off to camp, they go to the local shopping mall to collect their mutual presents and food forthe night’s party.
Which is when he confesses he's just had an affair (his fourth, it you count one-night stands and a hooker). He expects herto be the understanding wife of her book. Instead, she demands divorce. Allen wheedles, Midlersulks.

They argue, they make up. Several times.
Then Midler confesses she’s also having an affair. is Allen understanding? No. So here we go again.
We're talking mid-life marital crisis of the middle-class wealthy; we're talking security blanket consumerism; we’re talking dull film.
Bickering Midler and Allen are surprisingly flat, the chuckles and sharp lines few and far between (though Woody buffs will appreciate the parody Bergman title and his character’s New York putdown). Even the shopping's boring. Less marital tiff, more marital stilt. (Mike Davis)
