White Palace (18) (Luis Mandoki, US, 1990) Susan Sarandon, James Spader, Kathy Bates, Jason Alexander. 102 mins. James Spader is a yuppie again, and because he’s played the part so often, he’s absolutely perfect in the role. This time; he‘s a young executive in the Midwest with a luxury flat and a wardrobe full otsuits. He also happens
' to be a widower. One night, out
partying with friends, he ends up going into the White Palace burger barto complain about a messed-up order. Behind the counter is a significantly older Susan Sarandon, and the terms are quickly set for a love story across
the years. He's twenty-seven and she's i
forty-three, and to begin with he thinks of it as just a one-night stand. But gradually he finds himself drawn back to her cluttered mess of a house again and again and things start to get very senous.
As a love story, White Palace is contrived and predictable, but it's enjoyable for all that. Where is really scores, though, is in its incisive and very amusing exposure of the usually suppressed class divisions in American society. For most offhe movie, Spader is embarrassed about his relationship with Sarandon and spends a lot of time keeping her out of the way of his workmates and family. The payoff to all this is the long and very funny sequence when the couple finally turn up at his stuck-up folks’ big
mansion, and she gives a good as she gets in the arrogance and humiliation stakes. Lateron, Spaderstarts getting similarly aggressive himself, and comes out with an immortal line about one prim and proper girl who’s taking a keen interest in him: ‘There’s no dust in her dust-buster!‘ he shrieks. The moral
