TURNTABLE

we“ $171355

Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Graham Hall . . . Seven favourite records chose by Scotland‘s King of Nightlife Kitsch, the man behind Shag and Alphabet.

1. Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?: Lloyd Cole And The Commotions. Possibly the most perfect three minutes of pop ever.

2. Sheep: The Housemartins. P.D. Heaton‘s elegant tribute to Sun readers everywhere and my personal one to Kelvin and Fleming, the two coolest sheep ever. Utterly brill.

3. Good Morning Britain: Aztec Camera

And Mick Jones. Just edging out ‘Down The Dip' because Graeme (Provan, club-running partner) and I saw them encore with it rather excellently at the Barrowland last summer. Fortunately, even if you listen really closely to the live version on the B-side, you still can't hear us singing along.

4. World In Motion: New Order. Because there’s something intrinsically cool about a football song which is both better and more successful than the team it’s supposed to be championing.

5. Rose Garden: Lynn Anderson. This reminds me of when I introduced country music to Glasgow. ‘You can't always get what you want' without the pretension.

6. Birdhouse In Your Soul: They Might Be Giants. This reminds me of something else which I'd rather not talk about. Still a brilliant song though.

7. Sit Down: James. With this about to become-albeit belatedly—a much deserved Number One, it proves there is hope for music yet. Remember kids, if it goes twiddle, twiddle, bleep then it’s probably shite . . .

or leaflet. I've always thought that the term ‘indie kid' was one of affection. but the 'I‘ankies have taken a little offence. so 111 just say this is a club run bystudents who got fed up with the often predictable fodder at the unions and decided to set up their own alternative alternative.
