CLUBS
I Oh no! Lord help us. but it looks like there'sa 70s revival just around the corner. Lurex tank tops. burgundy hipsters. . .the return of the decade that taste forgot could see us all looking like extras from the ‘Saturday Night Fever' disco scene. Not in Scotland. I hear you shriek. but too late — those Slam boys have already introduced a more disco-based playlist at Icon (Sub Club. Fridays). whilst in Edinburgh. Millies have never stopped spinning that sort ofthing since the first time round. Shake your funky booties. kids.
I ()n a slightly more tasteful note. London‘s mighty Brain Club returns to Edinburgh's Calton Studios on 3 May for the start ofa regular seriesof such one-offs. Expect live acts plus big name DJs— and more. But No 70s kitsch. Honest.
I Big changesat Edinburgh’s 9c Victoria Street venue. we hear. Two ofthe cities biggest clubs. Ice and Floral Riot. are moving in after abandoning their usual homes. lee beginson 18 April. with the same name and playlist'. Floral Riot becomes Glider the following night. and also switches to a more indie-dance bias. Both Zappa and Beats. meanwhile. have closed down to allow this move. Watch this space for detailsofeven more changes...
I Forthcoming gigs in clubs part 1: Edinburgh‘s very own Botany 5 play at home in the Calton Studios on 26 April. Last year's Slam-remixed ‘Love Bomb' 7in promised much. so this could be well worth a look.
I Forthcoming gigs part 2: Gang Starr atThe Tunnel. Glasgow on 27 April. A sort of US version of Galliano. they finally gained much- deserved recognition with their performance in Spike Lee‘s ‘Mo Better Blues'. This year‘s tip for the top.
I Forthcoming gigs part 3: Can I kick it'.’ Yes you can . if you pop down to Glasgow‘s Tunnel on 8 May. when A Tribe Called Quest will be performing. Word of warning. though — after their recent chart success this will probably sell out mighty quick.
I Forthcoming gigs part 4: Hippychicks Soho play Glasgow‘s Tunnel on 15 May. and Edinburgh‘s Calton Studios on 4 June. I don‘t think 1 need tosay much about thisone.
LISTINGS
GLASGOW Fndays
I Breze at Rooftops (Secrets Lounge).
1 1pm—3am. The dance and house club from Sunday nights at Vertigo goes travelling. with a slightly more underground feel. to replace Delirium 7. Watch out for drinks promos and a membership scheme.
I Club Karine at Tin Pan Alley. 10.30pm—late. £3 (£2.50). 5 Apr only. Monthly club with a Latin feel. but also playing jazz and funk and featuringlive percussion playing. A tapas bar also helps to create an unusual atmosphere and should save you running out to the nearest pizza shop after working up an appetite on the dancefloor.
I Crash at the Cotton Club. llpm—3.30am. £3 (£2 with matric card or before midnight). Unpretentious (apart from some of the punters). long-running and well-respected indie crossover/dance/ groove night with a loyal crowd.
I Devotion at the Art School. 9.30pm—2am. £1 .50(£1 students). ‘Student music'. soul and house. apparently. so there you go. Drinks promos.
I Earth at Rain. 375 Sauchiehall Street.
1 1pm—3am. £3.50 (£2 with matric card). Rare groove. soul and bass dance night building up quite a following. with DJs Nick Peacock and Harri. Watch out for drinks promos.
I Icon at the Sub Club. 11pm—3.30am. £3.50. Replacingtheirlong~running and highly successful Joy. Icon is the brave new hope for the Slam crew which they‘re hoping will make a name for itself with a slightly more ‘disco‘-based house style. but don‘t worry. I'm sure they don‘t mean The Village People. Lots ofbig-name guest DJs.
I Radio City at the Mayfair (Cameo Suite). 10pm—2.30am. £2. Sixties rock merging surprisingly well with 90s rave. with the odd dance record thrown in too.
I Rumble at Joe Paparazzr. 11pm—3.30am. £3.50 (£1 .50 student). The only problem with Rumble is that it‘s so dark. so big and so popular that ifyou‘re hoping to see friends there you really have to arrange it well in advance. Personally. I wish they wouldn‘t inflict full half-hoursof bleep-bleep-twiddle on us. but those cavernous green shapes the lasers throw up keep boredom at bay during them. See you on the stairs at half-past one.
I Shag at Fury Murry’s. 11pm—late. £2.50. Enjoyable mish-mash of indie-dance. pop. classic chart hitsand silly singalongs. Plus free chocolate.
I Temptation at Strathclyde University. 9pm—2am. £1.50. Students and guests only. New look to Level 8. with DJ-about-town Tam Coyle dishing out his usual enjoyable indie-dance sensations for the studes. Level 4 remains its usual sub-Sub Club self.
I Time Warp Rock Club at The Venue. 10pm-late. £2.50 (£6 for weekend ticket). Yet another new venue for the Time Warp. as the plucky little rock club shifts from Club Hacienda. They‘re amenable to requests. but basically it’s a mixture of rock. metal. thrash. punk. goth and ‘good indie sounds’ rather than heavier stuff- i.c. you can probably dance to it as well as
nod your head a lot. All drinks£l.
I The Tunnel llpm-3.30am. £4. Rap. house. techno and dance music in well-trendy atmosphere - goggle at the lack of clothes taste and try to guess just how much those skimpy little shorts cost. 1 could do without the cavortings ofthose ‘dancers’ on pillars. though.

I Detect at Fury Murray‘s. l 1pm—latc. £3. Dance music and 80s pop for the medium hip student types.
I Divine at the Art School. 11pm—2am. £1.50. Deee-groovy 60$ pop and indie faves of a psychedelic persuasion - clothes and complexions spotty. but music coherently good.
I Dream Sequence at Rooftops (Secrets lounge). 10pm-3am. £2.50. A good selection of indie dance faves in congenial atmosphere — could fill a cavernous gap on a Saturday night.
I Early Birds at Club Xchange. Rpm—late. £1.50. Run by the Strathclyde Lesbian and Gay Switchboard with DJ Manu. this new club is women only until 11.30pm. giving women a bit ofspace away from the hassles they usually face in clubs. After 11.30pm. they‘ll let anybody in.
