ART & EXHIBITIONS
MEETING PLACE
Living Room, Glasgow.
Thanks to artist Gianni Piacentini, European artists invited to Glasgow eitherthrough the EC Pepinieres scheme orthe Year at Culture are having an opportunity to work with their Glaswegian counterparts and vice versa. In yourtraditional exhibition, painting or sculpture is placed side by side with no interchange between artists. Here in Piacentini's living room, everyone is speaking and working alongside each other. In addition, the space has become a meeting place. Each week, a ditlerent group of artists is making individual site-specilic works. Find your way here!
In a work called Musehome, French artist Boris Achour has labelled every item in the llat with its French name. Working spatially through and across time, the labelling brings France, Switzerland, Belgium and irancophone Atrica into the room, according to one’s experience at language, other cultures and codes and, by extension, dillerent
smells and sounds. Specilic institutions are called up: a school, a teacher, a classroom. Each person’s associations will be dilterent and therelore very private. Paradoxically, here, language delimits what we cannot share. Without a knowledge at French the experience is delensive, one at exclusions. It is also territorial marking by the artist. There is potential here tor a rich body at work: Ioreign language teaching inspired Ionesco’s mature work.
This is just one day and one artist, though; other artists taking part are Dave Allen, Jaqueline Donachie, Christine Borland, Jonathan Monk, Karen Vaughan, Clare Barclay, Chalotte Moeker, Julie Roberts, Martin Boyce, Harvey Jackson, Craig Richardson, Roddy Buchanan, Panos Charalambus, Douglas Gordon, Elise Parre, Marious Spiliopoulous.
