TENNENTS SCOTTISH CUP FOURTH ROUND I Ayr United v Hamilton Academicals Somerset Park. Ayr. Accies seem to be capable of raising their game for the big occasion. and should progress to the quarter-finals. if their defence doesn‘t spring a leak. 3pm.
I Dundee United v Airdrieonians Tannadice Park. Dundee. United scraped past East Fife in the last round after scoringa 93rd-minute equalising goal in the first match. They will be hoping to settle things rather earlier against an Airdrie side who will not be a pushover. 3pm.

STONE POSES
‘ The traditional Scottish winter sport oi curling has been adopted, by TV producers at least, as something at a growth sport or late. The slightly bizarre sight of shell-suited competitors releasing ‘stones’, and feverishly sweeping them into position has become a regular occurrence on our“! screens.
At grass-roots level, the sport certainly seems to be thriving, with over 3000 participants at 650 ice rinks
irom Wick to Stranraer. The ice rinks provide a rather saier suriace than the original venues of irozen lochs. In the 19th century open air curling was apparently a common pastime, with the Lake at Monteith hosting the annual Grand Match, with plenty of whisky drinking and attendant sideshows. The eiiects oi global warming soon played their part, however, as can be deduced irom the ample supply at stones at the bottom of Edinburgh’s Duddingston Loch.
The basic aim at the sport is to direct the stones to a central target or tee. Teams comprise lour members: the skip, who generally orders people about and lines up the shots, as well as throwing the last two stones; the lead, who throws the first two shots, and does brush duty, and the second and third who throw two shots each, and help with the sweeping. Given the current climatic conditions, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see skips studying the suriace at one or two lochs beiore the winter is out. (Jane Humphries)

I Rangers v Cowdenbeath lbrox Stadium. Glasgow. Another tough home draw for the League leaders. say the cynics. Will Cowdenbeath pull off a huge shock at lbrox'.’ No. 3pm.

PREMIER DIVISION
I Dunfermline v Hearts East End Park. Dunfermline. After being knocked out of the Cup. and being humiliated by Aberdeen. Hearts will not be too confident about making the short trip across the Forth. although the League restructure leaves Dunfermline with little to play for except pride.

PREMIER LEAGUE
I Celtic v St Johnstone Celtic Park. Glasgow 3pm. The boys in green and white seem to be on the brink ofgetting their act together. A decent result against St Johnstone would be a vital boost in their push for a European qualifying place.

I Hibernian V St Minen Easter Road Park. Edinburgh. 3pm. One of those fixtures recently made meaningless. That must be a relief to two clubs who‘ve each had a disastrous season.
I Motherwell v Hearts Fir Park. Motherwell. 3pm. Two clubs on the further outskirts ofthe European place chase try to damage each other‘s chances. with the home side probably having the ed ye.
