Exhibitions 01 gallery artists are the tall-back of Christmas or summer shows, when galleries either want to sell off stoclt or go on holiday. They are often a mish-mash ol bin-ends, silly-season work that no one wants to think about too closely. it’s refreshing then to see the Glasgow Print Studio opening the year with a thought-through exhibition ol artists associated with their workshop.
Rather than have a theme of content, the exhibition has a technical theme: lithography. This obviously draws attention to the technical side of the work, and acts as a showcase for the extremely professional approach oi the Studio. Within this there are of course variations according to artist, some 01 whom understand the graphic possibilities ol lithograph very well, and others who would probably be happier stilt-screening.
The highpoint ol the more than 40 works by nineteen artists is a single Elspeth Lamb print, recalling her recent one-woman show, where supreme technical ability is matched by the desire to produce an image that

says something visually. On the other hand, an artist such as Alan Cox has produced a couple of much slighter pieces, where the overlapped colours result in hues that seem more accidental than good judgement. Dorothy Black is represented by two of her images at women’s torsos, both strong and decorative, reminiscent of the approach taken by Sonia Boyce in the loregrounding ol the fabric patterns of blouses.
Adrian Wiszniewslti has one rather heavily handled piece (too much black) and one whose lightness of touch, and reliance on the seductive quality of the paper on which it is printed, interestingly belles its subject: Ritual Killing. Joseph Urie’s work is competent but reductive in content, reminiscent of the illustrations to a book of fairy tales. With Itnee-jerlt subject matter Illte ‘Beauty and the Beast' (a weil-wom Urie theme, always left in the realm of the Romantic) he must expect ltnee-jerlt reactions. Elaine Kowalsiti is one at those deceptive artists: she makes it look so easy, but not a line is out oi place, not one colour is wrong, not one sentiment ls under-estimated. (Hilary Robinson)
