Glasgow
I Nine Below Zero King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, 272a St Vincent Street, 2215279. 10pm. £5. Renowned R&B outfit ofyore who seem to have reformed abruptly after a decade of inactivity. Half the original line-up remains intact, supplemented this time round by the rhythm section who normally back Rory Gallagher. Older cousins will remember them with fondness and pontificate ad nauseum on their importance within the grand scheme of thin s.
I Something Wild Studio, 12 Shuttle Street, Paisley, 889 6867. 10pm. £2. A new name, but a group previously familiar as Farewell Parade, who could rake the punters in to their shows better than most local competition.
I Hideaway Blues Band MacSorleys, Jamaica Street. 221 8499. 8.30pm. Free. Residency. Blues and soul.
Edinburgh
I Silent Falls Teviot Row Student Union, Teviot Row. Students and guests. Claiming to have beefed their sound up and ‘lost the poppy edge we neverliked‘, Silent Falls are raising money for a 12in single to appear around March.
I Free’n’Easy Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.
I Head in the Sand Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free. Sharp and sprightly pop, showing greater substance and potential than many other local groups of similar stature.
I The Spanner: Trading Post, The Shore, 553 5153. 9pm. Free. A duo with drum machine, keyboards and guitars doing a whole range of covers.
I The ilootsles Duo Globe, West Port , 229 4553. 9.30pm. Free. Residency. Taking time out from The Rootsie Tootsie Blues Band, Jim Condie on guitar and Ron Tate on vocals and harmonica play blues, gospel and a sprinkle ofjazz.
I Gordon Campbell Blue Lagoon, Angle Park Terrace, 337 9922. Residency. Known chiefly for his work at R. E. L. Studios and West Lothian College Music Management Course, Campbell is also an experienced and accomplished songwriter.
I L08 Supreme: Leith Oyster Bar, The Shore, 554 6294. 9pm. Free. Residency. Rock and blues covers.
SATURDAY 12 Glasgow
I Home Cumbernauld Theatre , Braehead Road.Cumbernau1d 0236 732887. A gig in aid ofAmnesty International with The River Detectives, The Trash Can Sinatras, Teenage Fanclub, Spirea X and, the only non-local act, My Bloody Valentine.
I The Hardllne King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, 272a St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. £3. Less soul and more MOR than we‘ve come to expect from a Precious Organisation signing — not that there‘s anything wrong with a hit of diversity, but why snoozy rock?
I The Tremens Halt Bar, 160 Woodlands Road, 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free. Manic folk ranting from this tambour-belting clan of wit merchants. Their local humour is obvious and immediate (if you come from
almost tribal rhythms.
I The Waitlng Hour Time Warp Rock Club, Henry Afrika's, Pier 39, Clyde Street, 221 0021. 1pm. £1. A bit ofgothic rock inthe local band slot at Henry Afrika‘s this week.
I Trident Studio, 12 Shuttle Street, Paisley, 889 6867. 10pm. £1.50. Heavy
rock.
I Alison Williams Vertigo. 10pm. £6. Only Scottish appearance for this respected but dull soul singer — and only a PA atthat.
Edinburgh
I Nlne Below Zero Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. See Fri 11.
I The Shadowland and Studio 68 Basin Street, Haymarket Terrace, 337 1006.1t‘s been suggested that this might not be the best night for The Shadowland as they’re competing with Nine Below Zero for attention, but the two bands really aren‘t that close. The Shadowland have definite R&B roots, but combine it with a more contemporary rock element. Studio 68 have come all the way from London, in common with more and more of the support bands now playing at Basin Street.
I The Untouchables Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9pm. By all accounts, The Untouchables are Bluefinger with reshuffled personnel and a new name. I imagine we can expect 505- and 60s-influenced rock‘n’roll in a similar vein to the old group.
I Southside Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free. From the cheeky but geographically appropriate name, are we to expect something of the baggy persuasion?
I The Junkyard Angels St James Oyster Bar, Calton Road, 557 2925. 9pm. Free. Residency. Oyster Bar favourite Sandyman joins forces with Lost Soul Band members for a folky, harmonious acoustic set.
I The 508/608 Band Trading Post, The Shore, 553 5153. 9pm. Free. Covers from said decades, including the like of‘Red House‘, ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining' and ‘You Really Got Me‘.
I The Strat Boys Globe, West Port, 229 4553. 9.30pm. Free. Residency. Rock and blues covers.
I Buy Me an Umbrella Queen Street Oyster Bar, Queen Street, 226 2530. 9.30pm. Free. Spanish r'nythms, bongos, electric and acoustic guitars.
SUNDAY 13 Glasgow I Glasgow Time Warp Rock Club, Henry
Afrika‘s, Pier 39, Clyde Street, 2210021. 8pm. £3. Despite nominally nailing their colours to the Scottish mast, Glasgow's music owes more to the American AOR sound of bands like Foreigner and Journey. All drinks £1 as usual forthe Time Warp.
Edinburgh
I Bolt Thrower Moshpit, Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. ‘Concession of Pain‘. ‘Realm of Chaos‘ - all such cheery~sounding stuff, but then ifyou're an earsplitting thrash band from Birmingham, perhaps that‘s the sort of thing you spend your days contemplating. Undoubtedly one of the best of the school of British grindcore. and one of the longest-lived.
I Rockin’ Blue Hound Dogs Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after
9pm. I The Volunteers Ryrie‘s. Haymarket Terrace, 337 7582. Fortnightly residency.
MONDAY 14 Edinburgh
I Riverhead and The Ruby Sult Venue. Calton Road, 557 3073. Looks to be a complementary double bill of local acts. what with both having melody and song structure high on the agenda. The all-male Riverhead are rather more likely to rock out, however.
I The Elevators Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free. Fife-based R&B band.
I Dave Robb Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free. Singer and songwriter with well crafted numbers and a bit ofa folky influence, and ifthat doesn‘t tempt you to drop in, then the lure of seeing Edinburgh‘s most famous bouzouki player will.
I Nobody's Business Bannerman‘s, Niddry Street, 556 3254. 9pm. Free. Residency. Friendly blues band.
I Alastair Mathleson Leith Oyster Bar. The Shore, 554 6294. 9pm. Free.
I Live music Green Tree, Cowgate , 225 1294.
