I The Hoax and The Volunteers Reflections, Cumbernauld. 8pm. Free. The Hoax from Cumbernauld appearto have some connection with local legends-in-their-lunchbrcak Barky! Barky. The Volunteers, a bizarre guitar band along the lines of a funkier Cramps, tussle with The Railway Children over the enviable ‘Wigan‘s finest‘ label. Plusthe Demo Disco, organised in conjunction with Noise Box.
I Bollin’ Joe and the Jets Curlers, 256 Byres Road, 334 1284. 9pm. Free. Residency. Fifties rock'n’roll.

THURSDAY 15 Glasgow
I Cheap and Nasty and Barfly Studio 55, Bruce Hotel, Cornwall Street, East Kilbride, 035 522 9771. 8pm. £3. Ex-Hanoi Rocks members. . . need we say more? Barfly are a similarly glam bunch of lads (at least I think they’re lads, it’s hard to tell . . .).
I Colour Shelter, 7 chfrew Court, 332 6231 . 9.30pm. Free. New localfive-piece with a powerful female vocalist and a smooth pop soul sound. Not my cup of expresso.

session-playing jazz-funkers return after a long absence.
FRIDAY 16
Glasgow
I Northside Barrowland, 244 Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £5.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just the Ticket, Virgin, Union Street. 226 4679. So Northside have actually made it into the charts — excuse me while 1 wipe the egg off my face. Like Flowered Up, it‘s easy to see why Northside are so often reviled, but at the end of the day songs matter more than attitude and Northside have one good song which they reproduce in varying guises throughout their live set to often enviable effect. It‘s good to see them getting their fifteen minutes of fame, but I still suspect that‘s all it will be.
I My Jealous God Strathclyde University Union, 90John Street, 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Students and guests. Guest DJs Dave Haslam and Dave Booth of Hacienda notoriety. See Preview.
I The Cranes King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, 272a St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. £4. Haunting, almost ethereal, cooing from Alison Shaw grounded in some welcome reality by a background of almost industrial noise. Makes for a compulsive combination on record, but live it falls well short of bewitching. In fact, Alison's netherworld is just downright pretentious when surveyed by a discerning crowd of punters.
I The Troubleshooters The Venue, 490 Sauchiehall Street, 332 3872. 11pm. £3.50. I Yo Yo tioney The Champion, 56 Oswald Street, 248 6486. See Preview.
I The Honeychureh Crash, Cotton Club, 5—7 Scott Street, 332 0712. 11pm. £4. Slick, commercial pop/rock of interest to those whose record collections feature the likes of Texas and The Silencers.
I The Hideaway Blues Band MacSorleys. Jamaica Street, 221 8499. 8.30pm. Free. Residency. See Fri 9.
I Jamie Barnes and Cochise Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley, 889 6867. 9.30pm. Free. Residency.
I Big George and The Business Platini‘s. West Nile Street. See Fri 9.
Edinburgh

I 801 Negociants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.45pm.

I Los Supremos Leith Oyster Bar. The Shore, 552 6294. 9.30pm. Free. Residency. Rock and blues covers.
SATURDAY 17 Glasgow
I Flowered Up Mayfair, 490 Sauchiehall Street, 332 3872. 7pm. £6. Tickets from Just the Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. Aside from some seriously funky songs, Flowered Up‘s greatest asset is the impish sense of humour they inject into everything they do, placing them further along the pantomime trail than other similarly devil-may-care indie dance groups. it takes the grating edge off Liam’s barrow-boy vocals and makes for a very entertaining live set. Floral headgear opuonaL
I The Sandkings King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, 272a St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. £4. Third appearance for the Sandkings at King Tut's this year and a
