ROCK & BLUES
Yorkers, out promoting their recent RCA LP Vices. Called ‘the perfect hybrid of Aerosmith. The Doors. The Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd‘, this is their first British tour. And ifyou think rapis over-populated by preening. self-glorifying hard men, take a listen to the lyrics on Vices. I‘ll bet you ‘ride like a hog‘, darling. I Live music Amphitheatre, Lothian Road, 229 7670. Noon—2pm. Third of the weekly Radio Forth shows. which kicked off with Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, The James Taylor Quartet and Bloomsday a fortnight ago. Tickets available from the Amphitheatre or by phoning up Radio Forth at the prescribed times. I The Vibrators Basin Street, Haymarket Terrace, 337 1006. Is this the reformed Vibrators or the re-re-reformed Vibrators? Either way, something around here smells long past its sell-by date. I The Junkyard Angels St James Oyster Bar, Calton Road, 557 2925. 9pm. Free. Residency. Oyster Bar regulars Sandyman and The Lost Soul Band team up for a folky, harmonious acoustic set. SUNDAY 11 Glasgow
I Gaye Byiten on Acid Glasgow College, 70 Cowcaddens Road, 332 0681. 9pm. £4 (advance). £4.50 (door). Students and guests. Past their peak, I fear. but Gaye Bykers should still be able to pack in a good crowd from their loyal following, because although they may have run out of ideas on record, their mish-mash of grunge, grebo, growls, samples and general sickness remains an extremely funny live spectacle.
I Horse Mayfair, 490 Sauchiehall Street, 332 3872. SOLD OUT. Smooth, soulful | pop delivered in a slick, professional ‘ manner. Fine if that‘s your idea of a fun night out but give me barbs and spontaneity any day. Can we have a bitof excitement please?
I Remember Fun and The Baillie: Stigma, Tuxedo Princess, Anderston Quay, 204 1150. 9pm. £2. Local indie popsters Remember Fun. still making sweet though hardly earth-shattering music after all these years. 1986 seems an eternity away. as The Barflies have obviously realised, because they combine their Commotions-Iike pop with the ethics of the crossover brigade. emerging with a lot of credibility if not originality.
I Circus at Power Videodrome. 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. 8pm. £4. See Sat 10.
I Elephant ttolee Altair 4, Rooftops, 92 Sauchiehall Street, 332 5883. 11pm. £2. Fairly interesting Edinburgh crew drawing on a variety of classic indie influences- mentioning no names, but several early 805 Liverpudlian bands spring to mind - who as yet have failed to pool them to any great effect. Give 'em time.
I Wile Hot: and Murmur Studio, 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley, 889 6867. 9pm. £1 . Slade meets REM? Well, it‘s just a thought.
Edinburgh
I The Lost Soul Band St James Oyster Bar, Calton Road, 557 2925. 9pm. Free. The only opportunity any more to see them
free, as the Oyster Bar remind us. And how long will that last if the record companies that have been circling around them sign them up? Pleasant. melodious. with a nod to The Waterboys.
I Woodrow Wilson Preservation Hall, Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm. Excellent blues and soul singer, who has been quiet for most ofthe year. and is making up for it by playing two nights at the Pres. This is the first.

TUESDAY 13 l
Glasgow
I The Fat Lady Sings King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, 272a St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 10pm. £4. Irish band who share the same spirit as fellow countrymen An Emotional Fish and Something Happens (even if they‘re not quite as crass and rocky) and peddling the same irritating vocal mannerisms as Mike Scott and his countless wannabees. Already familiar in these parts for their Big Day appearance and, owing to the popularity of this kind of pop/rock in Scotland, it might be an ideato arrive early.
I The Hideaway Blues Band Curlers. 256 Byres Road, 334 1284. 9pm. Free. Residency. See Fri 9.
I Colon 23 Outhouse, 1155 Cathcart Road. 649 0184. 10pm. Free. AOR band back at the Outhouse shortly after their mini-residency.

I Carol Laula Oddfellows, Forrest Road. 2201816. Laula has assembled a full band for her first Edinburgh gig in some time. Fine strong voice, and she’ll be looking to live down the rather syrupy ‘Standing Proud‘ single that was chosen as Glasgow‘s Year of Culture song.
