SUBTLE SPIRIT
The Eclectic Spirit: Imogen Cunningham, 1883-1976, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
It is a matter of sad historical neglect that Imogen Cunningham’s photographic work has never been comprehensively exhibited in this country before. Cunningham's lite and work occupies more than 50 per cent of the period following the invention of photography itself. Historically and aesthetically, her cultural contribution and influence are significant. This outstanding exhibition is therefore a long overdue opportunity to appreciate this.
Although Cunningham lived and worked in the American Mid West, the large part of her prolific career was spent in San Francisco. Her association with the Group l.64
reflected the importance of technical concerns centred on compositional sharpness and clarity of form. Her diversity within this tormalisf philosophy created work which is experimental, poetic and psychologically potent. The content of her work represents the breadth of her vision and interest in ‘ideas without end.’
Her subject matter ranges from fexturally precise plant studies to abstract portraiture which reveals her interest in multiple exposure and double imagery. Frida Kahlo, August Sander, Brassai, Dorothea Lange, Alfred Steiglltz are captured with sensitivity and warmth. Cunningham’s self and family portraits convey her sense of humour and psychological perception. ‘SeIf Portrait With Grandchildren in the Funhouse’ , ‘My Father—At Ninety’ and ‘Sell Portrait In Copenhagen’ illustrate her concern with the psychology of age and development. Herwork seems to freeze the ’idea of the person’ and makes the viewer compelled by the subject whether in her fascination with children’s play, father-love or subverting stereotypes of ageing and sexuality.
Imogen Cunningham commented, ‘There are plenty of the subtleties of life upon the earth which need delicate interpretation.’ Her way of looking at the subtleties of emotion, natural form and sell-representation is profoundly detailed, like a well-crafted visual poem. (Lorna J. Waite)
