MUSIC/ROCK
fusion of Latin. ethnic. even Oriental influences. The band themselves can‘t even describe their music - like them 1 would say hear for yourselfand then decide. See Preview.
I Midnight Crisis The Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231. 10pm. Free. Blues/rock. I Big Ted’s Party and A Boy Called Bob Reflections. Cumbcrnauld. 7pm. 50p. Despite their wonderful name. Big Ted‘s Party‘s blues sound offers little in the way of a Play School fetish. A Boy Called Bob are already familiar round these parts for their Beatlesque sound.

I The Liberties Tunnel: 84 Mitchell Street. 2041000. 11pm. £3 (£1 .5()student). See Fri 28.
I Eat King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street. 2215279. 10pm.£3. Doom-laden. angst-ridden. foreboding lyrics; slow. heavy guitar riff upon slow. heavy guitar riff. propelled along by powerful. insistent rhythms—somehow Eat don‘t sound as attractive on paperas they do on vinyl. However. anyone who has heard their better-than-the-original version of The Lovin‘ Spoonful‘s ‘Summer in the City‘ will understand the giddy heights their music can spiral to and can at least guess at their potential for stunning live performance.
I The Ruby Suit Studio 55. Bruce Hotel. Cornwall Street. East Kilbridc. 035 522 9771 . 8pm. £2. A jewel ofa band(ouch!) from Edinburgh.
I The Honey Church King‘s Court. 7 Osbourne Street. 552 2250. 10pm. Free. This band‘s currently circulating demo seems to be currying favour among fansof the heavier commercial pop/rock often produced by Scottish bands.
I Kicks The Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231. 10pm. Free.
I The Parallelograms Halt Bar. 160 Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free. Traditional 50s and 60s rock‘n‘roll. which would suggest a good time to be had by all who see them live.

FRIDAY 5 Glasgow
I BMX Bandits and The Numpll Family Glasgow College. 70 Cowcaddens Road. 3320681. 9pm. £5.50. Students and guests. Both these bands are actuallyjust providing eclectic support for the still-to-bc-confirmed main act at this Fresher‘s Ball. Let it simply be said they‘re a successful Edinburgh band. who have as little in common with the BMX Bandits as the Humpff Family do.
I Horse Strathclyde University Union. 90 John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Students and guests. Rich. powerful vocals and strong soulful tunes — fine ifyou like that sort ofthing. but 1 think 1‘11pass.thank you. no matter how appealing they might sound. And what happened to the big commercial hopes of a few months ago? No matter— they seem to have the integrity to stick to their principles. however outmoded they may be.
I Periect Disaster King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 10pm. £3.50. The best thing aboutThe Perfect Disaster. apart from Jo Higgs' fab purple velvet leggings. is that although they don‘t sound particularly original. you can‘t seem to pin down their influences long enough to decide just who they remind you of. with the roundabout result that you end up appreciating them for what they are — a loud. energetic. janeg concoction. The Jesus and Mary Chain‘s ‘Sidewalking‘ period came briefly to mind last time they played up here. but they‘ve probably moved on several light years since then.
I Joanna Law The Tunnel. 84 Mitchell Street. 204 1000. 11pm. £5. An unknown quantity as far as 1 can make out. but judging from The Tunnel‘s initial live policy. she‘s bound to be big in American clubs.
I Deal llelghts Cajun Aces Cafe Bar. Glasgow‘s Glasgow. The Arches. Midland Street. 204 3993. 10pm. £3. Tickets from the Ticket Centre. Candleriggs. 227 5511. Chasing Big George‘s record for most enduring live act in the Glasgow area. For once. no one can seriously complain about the Deaf Height‘s lack ofmusical progression. That they always reassuringly sound the same is one ofthe reasons for their continuing popularity.
I Trust The Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court.332 6231. 10pm. Free.
Edinburgh
I New Fast Automatic Dallodils Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Live reports of these Mancunian sons just get betterand better. so with any luck they'll top their last Wah Wah Hut appearance. A good crowd seems a cert too. now that their irresistibly groovy last single ‘Big‘ has had time to percolate through the crossover clubs into the hearts of self-respecting indie kids all poised to devour the new single in the same fashion.
I Heavenly Floral Riot. Network 2. West Tollcross. 228 3252. 10.30pm—4am. £3. Live appearance for the indie dance group.
I The Liberties Moray House Student Union. Holyrood Road. 556 8455. Seemingly a students-only gig. although admission may be possible on the night. Check beforehand. See Fri 28.

I Tom's New Shoes Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.45pm. Free. See'l‘hurs 4.

I Delta Liars Preservation Hall. Victoria Street. 226 3816. £1 after 9pm.

I Las Filiplnas BB‘s Basement Bar. Barony Street (off Broughton Street) .556 8240. 5—7pm. 8—11pm. Free. Residency. every night except Sunday. See Fri 28.
SATURDAY 6
Glasgow
I That Petrol Emotion Queen Margaret Union. University Gardens. 3399784. 8pm. £4.50. Students and guests. Drawn into the dance melee shortly after The Shamen defected to acid territory. That Petrol Emotion have failed to cash inon the club explosion in the same way as their Aberdonian contemporaries. but seem unperturbed by developments of the crossover variety anyway. However. now the time is riper than ever fortheir guitar-based funk and Steve Mack‘s frenetic stage presence to gain even wider acceptance.
I Candy Flip (TBC) Metropolis. Saltcoats. Yes. you guessed it. it‘s a Schlitz/H) night. and we still haven't found out what date Candy Flip are playing. This is the best bet so far.
I The Diclties and The Senseless Things Glasgow College. 70 Cowcaddens Road. 332 0681 . 9pm. £4.50 (advance).£5 (door). Students and guests. It had to happen. The Senseless Things finally get to support their mentors (well. The Ramones were a bit busy tonight). and gawky gurus to many other young bandsof a poppy but thrashy nature as well. The stagediving at The Senseless Things' last Glasgow date was a comic spectacle. so more of the same. if you don‘t mind.
I New Fast Automatic Daiiodils King Tut‘s- Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street.221 5279. 10pm. £4. See Fri 5.
I The Pearliishers Strathclyde University Union. 90John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Students and guests. Determinedly sticking with the recycled Hearts and Minds sound. and hopefully retaining their pool of fans as a result. However. a new name seems to have signified a barrage of new material if not ofnew ideas. and their string of recent live dates is surely calculated to familiarize the punters with the more recent compositions.
I Deal Heights Cajun Aces Cafe Bar. Glasgow‘s Glasgow. The Arches. Midland Street. 204 3993. See Fri 5.
I One World Shelter. 7 Renfrew Court. 332 6231. 10pm. Free.
I Priest Town Hall Bar. 160Woodlands Road. 332 1210. 9.30pm. Free. The Halt swear on their lives that this Liverpool band are in fact a resurrected Echo and the Bunnymen - no bad thing if that‘s really what they sound like.
I The Sunclocits Blackfriars. 36 Bell Street. 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. Blues.
I Glasgow Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 889 6867. 9.30pm. Free.
I Acoustic Jam Studio. 12 Shuttle Street. Paisley. 8896867. 3pm. Free.

I Bruce Nomsby and The Range Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £10. £9. Although not one ofthe meatiest artists around. Hornsby‘s work is usually pleasant. with enough ofan intent to keep the music a few steps above musos‘ drivel. I Walk on Fire and Mansell Storm Bedrock Club. Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. Recent support slots with Ian Gillan and Dan Reed Network will have allowed MCA's Walk on Fire some valuable exposure to the most appropriate audience for their melodic rock.
