MUSIC/ ROCK
I The Field Mice and The Wake KingTut‘s Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 8pm. £3.50. A Sarah Recordsmur deforee. if such a thing is possible on a label with such a wimp-out of a music policy. 1 can't decide if they're to be admired or spurned for their fanatical pluggingof a fey. gutless. and ultimately obsolete. melodic sound. However. the company does have its charm-ridden. spell-binding moments. as not evidenced on their recent disappointing compilations. anti perhaps tonight will be one of them.
I Glasgow and Electric Daisies Videodrome. 33—39 York Street. 221 0441. 8pm. £2.50. Foreigner/Journey-type AOR supported in this instance by the band who used to be The Rain Angels. These hippy pretenders didn't fool anyone with their limp version of ‘California Dreamin" — everyone knows they‘re an out-and-out commercial pop
band. so why don‘t they just acknowledge 3
it and aim directly for that ever-increasing audience clustering around them?
I The Bogus Brothers Strathclyde University Union. 90 John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Students and guests. No direct relation to the Blues Brothers. but of the same family tree. Best ofthe Blues Brothers copyists. they play sassy cover versions of classic old soul tracks.

Students and guests. The bard of Timperley (or old papicr-mache head. as I prefer to think of him) returns with sidekick Little Frank for more annoyingly emasculated cover versions and his thoughts on life. the universe and the price of petrol. all delivered in that grating nasal twang of his. He taught Ian Brown everything he knows.

Glaswegian trio Babel inaugurate this mini musical season at the Tramway. picking up where 3BN left off a couple of months ago. but intended for a less identifiable audience due to the diversity of the acts involved. There have been plaudits galore for Babel since they first surfaced over a year ago. not least because of Storm Gordon's compelling vocals. Tonight they hope to galvanize the praise into some sort ofconcrete following. See Preview.

I The Lilac Time King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. 272a St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 10pm. £3.50. Some bands steal from the 60s with impish dexterity: othersjust flounder self-indulgently in unhealthy nostalgia. The Lilac Time belong to the latter category. Despite the enigmatic presence of Birmingham's most lovable eccentric Stephen Duffy and the odd charming. lazy ditty. their backwards-looking output is tired and uninspiring. They're probably best seenin intimate venues like this. where they can check that the audience isn‘t falling asleep.
I Music In Between Tramway Theatre. Albert Drive. 423 9527. 8pm. £5 (£3). Tickets from the Ticket Centre. Candleriggs. 227 5511. 10per cent discount for Tramway Friends. Rachaka are the mainstay behind this whole season of concerts. and probably best embody the hybrid nature of the event with their
Computers, kettle s, fridges, electric carving knives.
